Domestic violence in the UK: Voice of Russia

I think they?re a step in the right direction. I think it is really valuable to be talking about both the different types of abuse that can be present in a relationship. And also the broadening of the ages so that we are much more aware that younger, much younger people then we anticipate, are experiencing this kind of abuse as well. So, we really welcome these news.

Well, you work with young people, as you say today?s news means that 16 and 17-year-olds will now fall under these guidelines. Why was that change needed?

Because levels of abuse and violence are happening to much younger people. I mean, even teenagers as young as 13 or 14 are talking to us about levels of abusive behavior in the relationships that they have, which really is unacceptable, but they say very often is normal. So being shouted at, being controlled, being told what to do, and kind of stalked, you know, using mobile technology, and it?s really prevalent within their relationships.

You are talking about them as victims, as people affected by this. This change would actually include them as perpetrators as well. Do you come across that?

Yes, we are aware of that. I think what we tend to do as an organization is look at prevention, so we are looking at making sure that young people understand what the components of a healthy relationship can be, and then looking at what their rights and their responsibilities are within relationships. So it?s not just about what to do if you realize that you are victim of this, but actually your responsibility not to behave in an abusive or violent way towards somebody you might not describe as your partner. So I think domestic violence is a very interesting term, because people think of it as older people, and perhaps married people, or people living together, and it?s not very helpful. But the terminternet partner violence is better. But younger people are having less formal and less structured relationships, you know, they might just see one another, they might not turn to somebody as a boyfriend or girlfriend, but there can be still things prevalent within those relationships, whatever they are, that are really important to be addressing.
