Benjamin Graham: What This Womanizer Can Teach ... - Investment U

by Alexander Green, Investment U Chief Investment Strategist
    Friday, September 28, 2012: Issue #1871

The ?Father of Security Analysis? wasn?t much of a husband or father. He divorced his first wife in 1937, when divorce was still socially unacceptable, leaving his four children stigmatized.

The next year, he married a young actress. But his interest soon waned and he soon dumped her to marry his secretary. In between, he had so many lovers and affairs that in a new biography The Einstein of Money, the author calls him a ?swinger.? When he died in Provence at 87, it was in the arms of his long-time French mistress, whom he?d courted away from his son!

Needless to say, Benjamin Graham was not a family values guy. But he understood a lot about stock values. In fact, he pioneered the field of security analysis and made a fortune for himself in the stock market. Understanding even a little bit about his methods can make you a much better investor.

Graham arrived on Wall Street in 1914, a 20-year-old classicist fresh out of Columbia University. He began to make a name for himself by finding bargain stocks selling for far less than their intrinsic value. He soon put his money to work buying cheap stocks with a high margin of safety. In 1948, for instance, Graham invested a quarter of his firm?s capital in GEICO. It climbed 1,635% over the next eight years.

In 100 Minds That Made the Market, Ken Fisher writes that Graham ?hated technical tools like charts and graphs and equally distrusted growth investors? blind faith in a company?s management, upcoming products and present reputation ? those just couldn?t be measured in cold, hard numbers. Instead, Graham relied on earnings and dividends and felt book value ? the physical assets of a company ? was the basis for making sound investment decisions.?

Graham insisted you should buy a single share of a stock the same way you would buy an entire company. Understand the business. Analyze the balance sheet. Do the math. Forget about the state of the economy or the hot trend of the moment. The only thing that really matters is the health and assets of the business you?re buying, not who?s in the White House or what?s happening at the Fed.

Graham laid out his core principles in Security Analysis, now widely recognized as the bible of value investing and a textbook still used in many college investment courses more than 70 years after it was published. He later distilled this work into The Intelligent Investor, a book for the lay investor that still ranks in Amazon?s top 300 ? 62 years after it was first published. In fact, both books sell more copies each year now than when they were originally published, the true sign of an investment classic and a claim few books can make in any genre.

Today Graham is perhaps best known for his famous prot?g?, Warren Buffett. Buffett took Graham?s principles and used them to become the twentieth century?s best-known investor and one of the world?s wealthiest men.

Buffett still credits Graham for much of his success. ?No one ever became poor by reading Graham,? says Buffett.

I can?t imagine a serious stock market investor who wouldn?t profit from studying Graham?s disciplined, common-sense approach. He is rightly viewed as the father of fundamental security analysis. And ? given his social life ? perhaps the father of much else, as well.

    Good Investing,

    Alex

Israelis are prepared ? and not ? for an Iran attack

    Bernat Armangue / AP

An Israeli woman talks on the phone after collecting gas masks for her family in a shopping mall in Jerusalem in this Aug. 22 photo.

By Martin Fletcher, NBC News correspondent

TEL AVIV ? Did you know:

    • If a bomb explodes near you with a little bang, that's a sign it is carrying chemical or biological weapons? A loud bang means a conventional warhead.
    • If an attack is chemical, you will know right away? But if it's biological you'll only find out after a few days.
    • If it is nuclear, you should lie down and cover your head? And don't get up when the first blast wave passes over you because it will be followed by a second wave.

    Useful, eh?

All these facts are good to know if you are in Israel and war with Iran, and its proxies Hezbollah and Hamas, were to break out around you.

Report: Iran mulls 'pre-emptive attack' against Israel; commander warns of 'World War III'

Or if something happened with Syria, Iran's ally, which has large stockpiles of biological and conventional weapons.

With the latest opinion polls showing that half of Israelis fear for the continued existence of their state if war breaks out with Iran, and with more than half rating the chance of such a war within a year as "medium" or "high,? the more you know about what the war would entail, the better.

In an attempt to convey what he sees as a threat to Israel's existence, Israel's Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu used a cartoon to illustrate how close he says Iran is to developing a nuclear weapon. In a speech at the United Nations General Assembly he asked the world to help stop them. NBC's Andrea Mitchell reports.

    Here are some more facts:

    • If you suck a bead made of castor oil, it could kill you. It contains ricin, a lethal poison.
    • After Chernobyl, it took 25 years before Welsh sheep could be eaten because the nuclear radiation settled over Wales as it drifted most of the way round the world.
    • And cigarettes contain polonium 210, the poison used to murder the Soviet ex-spy Alexander Litvinenko.

Probably no country in the world is as prepared as Israel for such an attack, with every home built in the last 21 years possessing a mandatory bomb shelter. City centers have vast public shelters with special rooms set up for non-conventional attacks. And citizens are instructed in how to protect their bomb shelters against chemical and biological warfare.

    Mistakes happen
But mistakes can happen, as I can personally attest.?

One evening in the winter of 1991 during the first Gulf War, with Iraqi Scud missiles rocketing over Jordan toward Israel, the bomb alarm sounded. My family quickly locked themselves in our bomb shelter, and I raced through the dark, silent streets to broadcast from our NBC News studio.

Israel's Netanyahu: Draw 'clear red line' to stop Iran from getting nuclear weapons

This had become routine. I spent all night in the studio, responding to the many alarms, and went home around 5a.m. I didn't check on the family because I knew where the Scuds had fallen and none were near my home.

This one time, however, with 30 minutes to go before my next live broadcast hit, I had a sense that something was wrong. For the first time after an attack, I called home to see how my wife and my three sons, all aged below six, were faring.

Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu tells the UN general assembly Thursday that sanctions are not stopping Iran's nuclear program.

No answer. I called again. No answer. Twenty-five minutes to go before my next ?live hit? on TV with Tom Brokaw. I felt sick with worry. What could have happened?

I ran downstairs, jumped into my car and raced home. I figured a 10-minute drive, five minutes at home and 10 minutes back, I'd be in the studio with seconds to spare.

    Life-saving decision
Ends up, because of that calculation, I saved my family's lives.

When the all-clear sounded, my wife, our three sons, my sister-in-law and the dog, a schnauzer called Tofi, couldn't get out of the shelter.

The heavy steel lock would not budge. They hung on it and pulled and tried and tried but could not open the door. When I arrived home, about two hours after they had entered the bomb shelter, I heard faint cries of "help, help."

Instead of pushing the handle up, they had been pulling it down, locking it instead of opening it.

I was able to open the door from the outside and all was well.

But if I had stuck to my usual routine and not called home and just returned at 5 a.m., after leaving them at 8 p.m. the night before, they would have been dead.

It's simple math: An adult breathes about one cubic meter of air per hour, children more. Five people in a small room of about nine cubic meters would begin to lose air after two hours. Seven hours? They'd have all been dead.

A miracle? Sixth sense? Whatever, it's a warning of what can go wrong in times of stress. And however prepared Israelis are for what awaits them, accidents happen. When Iraq attacked Israel in 1991, far more people died of heart attacks than Scud rockets.

    Country on edge
Since that time, every apartment built in Israel must have a blast-proof room that protects citizens from conventional blasts and also, with plastic and tape, can protect against chemical and biological weapons too. Walls and doors are approximately 8-12 inches thick and doors and windows are airtight.

Every citizen has, in theory, a gas mask. In practice, there aren't enough to go around.

Everybody asks, do you think there will be war with Iran? Nobody knows, and if you see Israel?s crowded cafes, the bustling streets, the crammed beaches, you may think that nobody cares.

Yet Israel is a country on edge. Most seem to have bought Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu?s line that the price to pay to stop Iran from building a nuclear bomb is much lower than the price to be paid if Iran has the bomb.

Fueling those thoughts are memories of what happened when the Nazis killed 6 million Jews. Today, there are approximately 6 million Jews in Israel. Few Israelis can argue against Netanyahu's insistence of: Never again.

And yet, I don't know anyone here who has prepared their bomb shelter. They're all a mess, used to store boxes, suitcases, footballs and wine. They are used as computer rooms, bicycle storage, play rooms. The attitude is, for the most part, we'll worry about it when the time comes.

    Until then, live life.

NJ woman accused of cancer scam for wedding, cash

MOUNT HOLLY, N.J. (AP) ? When Lori Stilley told her friends and family that she had bladder cancer, they delivered meals, held raffles and a T-shirt sale, hastily planned and paid for her wedding and raised more than $10,000 for her treatment.

But prosecutors say it was all a scam.

Stilley, a 40-year-old who lives in Delran, N.J., was charged Wednesday with theft by deception, charges her lawyer denies.

Authorities say she told family and friends in February 2011 that she had stage 3 bladder cancer and would need chemotherapy and radiation. Two months later, she told them ? and posted on her Facebook page and personal website ? that it was now stage 4, which means the cancer was spreading to other parts of her body.

Her friends and supporters pitched in the way people often do for sick loved ones: making a schedule of meal deliveries and ? when she said she didn't have medical insurance ? raising money.

The Burlington County Prosecutor's Office said family and friends also hastily planned and paid for her wedding to her boyfriend last year.

Stilley even wrote an e-book about her experience. They say "I'mpossible: How A Facebook Group Loved Me Through Bladder Cancer," selling for $14.99 a copy, raised more than $3,000.

Her own sister says she was the one who turned in Stilley. Lori DiGiovanni told WCAU-TV that she became suspicious when Stilley's story changed quickly. Soon after telling friends and family that she was making hospice plans and was being given a month to live, she posted on Facebook that she felt a miracle coming and was feeling better.

DiGiovanni said she believes her sister needs mental-health help.

Stilley's lawyer, however, said she did not do anything wrong.

"The Prosecutor's Office has not presented me with any competent evidence that would lead me to believe they are able to prove my client did anything wrong," Adam Malamut told the Burlington County Times in a story published Thursday. "The only evidence I'm aware of are statements made that I believe to be slanderous in nature from a family member with whom she's had a fractured relationship."

Stilley was arrested Wednesday and released on bail of $25,000.

"For this defendant to represent that she was dying from this terrible disease for the sake of personal gain and sympathy goes way beyond simply being a criminal offense," Burlington County Prosecutor Robert Bernardi said in a statement, "it was extremely cruel to those who were concerned and worked hard to lend assistance."

Calif. man behind anti-Muslim film ordered jailed

LOS ANGELES (AP) ? The surrounding mystery of the man behind the crudely produced anti-Islamic video that sparked violence in the Middle East took a strange turn after he appeared in court and gave yet another name in a string of aliases.

Arrested on Thursday after authorities said he violated his probation from a 2010 check fraud conviction, Nakoula Basseley Nakoula told a judge his real name was Mark Basseley Youseff. He said he'd been using that name since 2002, even though he went by Nakoula in his fraud case.

The full story about Nakoula and the video "Innocence of Muslims" still isn't known more than two weeks after violence erupted in Egypt and Libya, where Ambassador Christopher Stevens and three others were killed in Benghazi. Violence related to the film has since spread, killing dozens more.

Citing a lengthy pattern of deception and the potential to flee, U.S. Central District Chief Magistrate Judge Suzanne Segal ordered Nakoula to remain in prison without bond until another judge can hold a hearing to determine if he broke the terms of his probation.

"The court has a lack of trust in this defendant at this time," Segal said.

Prosecutors noted Nakoula had eight probation violations, including lying to his probation officers and using aliases. He could face new charges that carry a maximum two-year prison term.

After his 2010 conviction, Nakoula was sentenced to 21 months in prison and was barred from using computers or the Internet for five years without approval from his probation officer, though prosecutors said none of the violations involved the Internet. He also wasn't supposed to use any name other than his true legal name without the prior written approval of his probation officer.

Three names, however, have been associated with Nakoula this month alone.

The movie was made last year by a man who called himself Sam Bacile. After the violence erupted, a man who identified himself as Bacile spoke to media outlets including The Associated Press, took credit for the film and said it was meant to portray the truth about Muhammad and Islam, which he called a cancer.

The next day, the AP determined there was no Bacile and linked the identity to Nakoula, a former gas station owner with a drug conviction and a history of using aliases. Federal authorities later confirmed there was no Bacile and that Nakoula was behind the movie.

Some of the false statements in Nakoula's alleged probation violations had to do with the film, Assistant U.S. Attorney Robert Dugdale said. Nakoula told probation officials his role was just writing the script, and denied going by the name Sam Bacile in connection with the film, Dugdale said.

Before going into hiding, Nakoula acknowledged to the AP that he was involved with the film, but said he only worked on logistics and management.

Nakoula, a Christian originally from Egypt, then went into hiding after he was identified as the man behind the trailer, which depicts Muhammad as a womanizer, religious fraud and child molester. He met with federal probation officials two weeks ago, led out of his home in suburban Cerritos in the middle of the night, flanked by Los Angeles County sheriff's deputies and cloaked in heavy clothing to protect his identity.

The public got their first good look at Nakoula on Thursday, although the news media was banned from the courtroom and reporters had to watch the proceedings on a TV in a nearby courthouse.

Nakoula wore beige pants and a collared shirt when he was led into the courtroom handcuffed and shackled. He appeared relaxed, smiling at one point before the hearing and conferring with his attorney.

Nakoula's attorney Steven Seiden sought to have the hearing closed and his client released on $10,000 bail. He argued Nakoula has checked in with his probation officer frequently and made no attempts to leave Southern California.

Seiden was concerned that Nakoula would be in danger in federal prison because of Muslim inmates, but prosecutors said he likely would be placed in protective custody.

Lawrence Rosenthal, a constitutional and criminal law professor at Chapman University School of Law in Orange, said it was "highly unusual" for a judge to order immediate detention on a probation violation for a nonviolent crime, but if there were questions about Nakoula's identity it was more likely.

"When the prosecution doesn't really know who they're dealing with, it's much easier to talk about flight," Rosenthal said. "I've prosecuted individuals who'd never given a real address. You don't know who you're dealing with, and you're just going to have very limited confidence about their ability to show up in court."

Enraged Muslims have demanded punishment for Nakoula, and a Pakistani cabinet minister has offered a $100,000 bounty to anyone who kills him.

First Amendment advocates have defended Nakoula's right to make the film while condemning its content. And federal officials likely will face criticism from those who say Nakoula's free speech rights were trampled by his arrest on a probation violation.

In arguing that Nakoula is a possible flight risk, Dugdale said Nakoula couldn't even reveal something as fundamental as his real name.

"He's a person who simply can't be trusted," he said.

10 Tips To Improve Productivity In The Workplace | Business 2 ...

Stress levels on a typical work day...

While employees are certainly responsible for the level of productivity in a business, the level of organisation and other factors from the management side are just as important. Here are a few things to take into consideration when trying to raise the level of productivity.

    1. Create a Pleasing Environment

If your team is a team and not a pit of gladiators fighting against each other, your company will get a lot more things done.

It?s a lot better to have a group of people who work together, help and feed ideas to each other, than people who need to watch their back and try to keep all good ideas for themselves for fear of the competition.

    2. Make Your Employees Happy

Underpaid, overworked employees will eventually flee your company in droves. Give them good benefits, a good pay for the work they do and occasional rewards when they excel, and you?ll have them stay, providing step 1 is in place.

    3. Assign Proper Roles

If things don?t get done it might be for several reasons:

    a. Someone is incompetent along the line ? due to either not knowing their job or to not being particularly on the ball

    b. The workflow bottlenecked somewhere

    c. There is no one in charge or there is no position to take care of it

    You solve these issues by:

    a. Training your personnel and locating the ones that are not capable of doing their job and put them onto some other task

    b. Reorganise the workflow and redistribute the workload, but if those aren?t enough hire more personnel

    c. Put someone in charge or be quick at spotting where a new position needs to be created to deal with the traffic that is meeting a dead end

    4. Make Sure Your Employees Have All They Need

If they are going to do work that needs a powerful computer, while trying to keep the costs down, make sure you give them one that is capable of doing the functions it needs to do. Getting a slightly more expensive computer now might save you money by cutting down execution times.

Make sure they have enough printer toner if they have a printer for example, and make sure it?s stocked up or quickly ordered. A secretary would find it very hard to send your personalised letters by the end of the day without it.

Same goes for supplies and office stationery.

    5. Communicate

Be transparent when possible. Hold staff meetings, let people know they can reach you whenever they need to, within limits of course. If you are the manager of a company with 700 people it might be a little hard to speak to everyone.

Regardless there should always be clear communication between people in a business, a misunderstood order might cause a lot of hassle later.

    6. Encourage and Motivate

Don?t give feedback only when it?s negative. It?s all well and good to consider perfection as the norm so that it goes unacknowledged, until you realise that nobody?s perfect and the lack of recognition makes people think they good efforts are not valued.

    7. Set Realistic Targets

You can?t really get anything done without targets. Sometimes there will just be situations where you have to get things done quickly, but a frantic workplace can?t be the norm unless you want to stress your employees to death.

It?s also a very good idea to encourage your employees to set targets by themselves. If they do they will gain more control over their workload and will realise they can produce more.

    8. Plan When Needed

Plans are important. Don?t forget to set them and let your employee knows what they are so that they can move in the right direction. Hold meetings when required.

    9. Act When Needed

Which should be way more often than when you hold meetings. You need to have people actually do the jobs, if you just bombard them with meeting after meeting after meeting they will not get anything done.

    10. Implement Options for Training

Things evolve, especially technology. Make sure you keep your staff up to date with courses or in-house training.

Do you have any tips for improving productivity ? or, even better, any horror stories of productivity drives gone wrong?

Let us know in the comments!

Gut bacteria could could play key role in development of type 2 diabetes

ScienceDaily (Sep. 26, 2012) ? The number of people suffering from type 2 diabetes world-wide has risen rapidly in recent years, and scientists estimate that just as many people could be suffering from the illness without realising it. New research now indicates that your gut bacteria can reveal whether you suffer from the disease.

"We have demonstrated that people with type 2 diabetes have a high level of pathogens in their intestines," says professor Jun Wang from the University of Copenhagen's Department of Biology and Novo Nordisk Foundation Center for Basic Metabolic Research.

    Important intestinal bacteria

The 1.5 kilograms of bacteria that we each carry in our intestines have an enormous impact on our health and well being. The bacteria normally live in a sensitive equilibrium but if this equilibrium is disrupted our health could suffer. In the new study, scientists examined the intestinal bacteria of 345 people from China, of which 171 had type 2 diabetes. The team managed to identify clear biological indicators that someday could be used in methods that provide faster and earlier diagnosis of type 2 diabetes.

The research, which was recently published in the scientific journal Nature, also demonstrated that people with type 2 diabetes have a more hostile bacterial environment in their intestines, which can increase resistance to different medicines.

Similar studies carried out on sufferers of type 2 diabetes in Denmark also discovered a significant imbalance in the function of their intestinal bacteria and composition. Future Danish studies will examine whether intestinal bacteria is already abnormal in people that are deemed to be at risk of developing diabetes.

"We are going to transplant gut bacteria from people that suffer from type 2 diabetes into mice and examine whether the mice then develop diabetes," says another of the lead scientists behind the project, professor Oluf Borbye Pedersen from the University of Copenhagen and centre director at LuCamp, the Lundbeck Foundation Centre for Applied Medical Genomics in Personalised Disease Prediction, Prevention and Care.

International research team investigates gut bacteria

By working together, a team scientists from the University of Copenhagen and the Beijing Genomics Institute (BGI) was able to make to several breakthroughs in the field of 'metagenomics'.

Scientists working on the EU research project MetaHIT have uncovered more than 3.3 million genes from gut bacteria found in people from Spain and Denmark. These genes could play a key role in understanding and treating a range of serious illnesses. According to Professor Karsten Kristiansen from the University of Copenhagen's Department of Biology, the recent discovery is an important step in the comprehensive international research that is currently underway to investigate the interplay between intestinal bacteria and health.

"The European and Chinese working on the MetaHIT project were able to make important new discoveries about the relationship between intestinal bacteria and health. The new discovery indicates a possible connection between type 2 diabetes and the intestinal bacteria in Chinese people," Kristiansen says.

"It is important to point out that our discovery demonstrates a correlation. The big question now is whether the changes in gut bacteria can affect the development of type 2 diabetes or whether the changes simply reflect that the person is suffering from type 2 diabetes."

When the Signal of a Cellular Phone is Lost: VarieArt

When the Signal of a Cellular Phone is Lost

Judging from its primary function to call and send short messages (SMS), mobile phone actually no longer a luxury gadget. In the market, there has been available a variety of types of cheap-cost mobile phones.?The main reason people buy and use mobile phone is simple, expected to be contacted or contact others anytime and anywhere. However, there are times when the expectation is not happening, like when the phone signal suddenly lost.

There are many reasons that make the signal ?of cellular phone is lost, among others, phone drop, wet, or damaged on its components.

If understood more deeply, power amplifier (functional components that provide power to the transmit signal when making a call), antenna switch (the component that serves as an automatic transfer switch and transmitter receiver path) until the software on the phone, are become frequent causes of loss of cellular signal.

    ?

Location also affects the cell phone signal. Examples where the signal is inaccessible are elevators, basements, mountains, or sea. Places that no signal is called a blank spot.

    ?

Although mobile operators continue to add and expand the network of Base Transceiver Station (BTS), sometimes we found places that are difficult to get a signal. Some of the ways in which to strengthen cell phone signal is to add aluminum patch on the back of the phone or on the cell phone battery.

    ?

A number of people considered that this way does not much help to strengthen the signal from the BTS, but others consider this as an effective way to address the problem of the lost signal.

    ?

Another way you can do is by using additional antennas that serve as repeaters to amplify signals. However, even though effective, the price of one device is much more expensive than the aluminum patch mentioned earlier.?

Childhood Obesity Increases Kids' Risk for Heart Disease Later ...

(PCM) As if you needed another reason to keep your kids healthy and active, a new study suggests that obese children develop risk factors for heart disease that usually aren?t seen until adulthood. That?s pretty scary. The risk factors ? including high blood pressure, high cholesterol, high blood sugar levels and even thickening of the heart muscle ? can boost a child?s risk of heart disease by up to 40 percent, say British researchers.

Lead researcher Claire Friedemann, of the department of primary care health sciences at Oxford University reported:

?We really need to take action on childhood obesity from as young an age as possible. We have shown that obesity is not just about appearance but could have a long-term effect on the health of the child. By not fully tackling the problem, we could lose the progress that has been made in treating heart disease in recent years.?

Researchers found that, compared to normal-weight children, obese children had significantly higher blood pressure, cholesterol and blood sugar levels as well as thicker heart muscles, which can increase the risk of heart disease and stroke by 30 to 40 percent when they reach adulthood. (Source)

Being obese in childhood may significantly worsen the risk factors and health consequences associated with adult obesity, including the risk of diabetes, premature cardiovascular disease, and death.

?Although the size of the effect that obesity has on the health of children?s hearts is worrying, the good news is that they can all be improved with a healthy diet and exercise,? Friedemann said. ?These habits are much easier to begin in childhood and carry through to adulthood.?

Kids are never too young to learn proper nutrition and how to make healthy lifestyle choices!

Peregrine says lung cancer trial data erroneous, shares sink

(Reuters) - Peregrine Pharmaceuticals Inc on Monday warned of discrepancies in the results of a mid-stage lung cancer trial, the second time in six months the drugmaker has got into trouble over its data, wiping off more than three-quarters of its market value.

The drug, bavituximab, is Peregrine's key product and is currently being testing it in multiple clinical trials.

Earlier this month, the company's stock climbed 50 percent after Peregrine issued results from the trial, saying the drug doubled survival time in lung cancer patients.

Analysts said the new finding came as a shock and might irreparably damage investors' confidence in the company. The question now is whether the data can be salvaged.

"If you can't trust this data, there will be doubt about any other data reported by the company. So the management will have to work hard to restore that trust," McNicoll, Lewis & Vlak analyst George Zavoico said.

The errors related to the trial were found while preparing for a review meeting of studies of the drug with regulatory authorities, the company said.

A subsequent review determined that the source of the discrepancies appeared to be an independent third party contracted to code and distribute investigational drug product.

"A coding discrepancy of this kind could mean that the company does not know which patient got placebo and which got bavituximab," McNicoll's Zavoico said.

The mid-stage trial involved 121 previously treated, or second-line, non-small cell lung cancer patients and was conducted across multiple geographies.

    NOT THE FIRST SNAG

This is not the first time that Peregrine is grappling with data discrepancy issues.

On March 9, company said that an independent review showed unexpectedly high progression-free survival rates in lung cancer patients receiving standard chemotherapy.

The trial was testing bavituximab in combination with standard cancer therapy in non-small cell lung cancer patients who have received no prior treatments - also known as first-line treatment.

The company's shares lost nearly a quarter of its value that day and closed at 68 cents. Since then, the stock has risen 8-fold before today's drop.

"By discounting the results of this second-line trial, the stock valuation appears to be resetting to, or close to, where it was last spring," McNicoll's Zavoico said.

"It is almost as though the last 4 months did not happen."

Shares of the Tustin, California-based company were down 77 percent at $1.23 in late morning trade on the Nasdaq on Monday. They touched a low of 80 cents earlier in the session.

    DATA SALVAGEABLE?

Zavoico said the company could try to figure out if the discrepancies occurred across geographies or were found in specific parts.

"That may be one way to salvage the data."

Bavituximab is a genetically engineered antibody, designed to target a lipid molecule found on tumor blood vessels, and works by suppressing the immune system.

It is being studied as a treatment for a range of cancers, including pancreatic and breast cancer, but the company said it does not expect the discrepancies to affect the other trials.

The trial for non-small cell lung cancer, testing the drug in patients who were previously treated, is the most advanced of several studies testing the drug.

Lifetech Capital analyst Stephen Dunn, who has had a 50 cents price target on the stock since April, said the trial data announced earlier this month looked "too good to be true."

"The control arm looked like it was too low and the treatment arm showed results that you don't just see in second-line lung cancer."

He said the 50-cent price target reflected only the value of the company's manufacturing business, Avid Bioservices, which makes clinical products for use in trials.

WisdomTree China Dividend Ex-Financials ETF Is Nearly Ex-Health Care, Too

The WisdomTree China Dividend Ex-Financials Fund (CHXF) began trading Wednesday (9/19/12), offering investors a diversified way to access Hong Kong listed stocks without exposure to the Financials sector.

The universe of the underlying index is composed of non-financial Chinese dividend-paying stocks that are listed in Hong Kong, have a minimum float-adjusted market capitalization of $1 billion, and paid at least $5 million in cash dividends over the past 12 months. The 10 largest stocks in each sector are weighted by their dividend streams, with individual stocks capped at 10% and sectors at 25%.

CHXF currently has 62 holdings with a country representation of China 71.4% and Hong Kong 28.6%. The largest positions include China Mobile Ltd 8.5% (CHL), PetroChina Co Ltd 4.9% (PTR), CNOOC Ltd 4.8% (CEO), China Shenhua Energy Co Ltd 4.7% (CUAEF.PK), and China Petroleum & Chemical Corp 4.5%.

From a sector viewpoint, the breakdown is Energy 24.5%, Materials 14.6%, Telecommunications 14.5%, Industrials 13.4%, Consumer Staples 13.3%, Technology 7.2%, Utilities 6.3%, Consumer Discretionary 5.4%, Health Care 0.9%, and Financials 0.0%.

The underlying index has a dividend yield of 2.99%, and the new ETF has an expense ratio of 0.63%, putting the estimated yield at about 2.3% for CHXF. Additional information is located in the overview page, press release, and prospectus.

Analysis/Opinion: I wrote There Are Now 23 China ETFs more than 17 months ago. Since that day, there have been at least nine more China-focused ETFs and ETNs brought to market, and only one has closed. With about 31 China ETPs for U.S. investors to choose from, do we really need another? The short answer is yes; CHXF is a welcome addition because it brings a fresh perspective on Chinese equities - dividend weighting and elimination of the typically large allocation to Financials.

WisdomTree's (WETF) CHXF Fact Sheet and Investment Case suggests it views iShares FTSE China 25 (FXI) and iShares MSCI China Index (MCHI) as the major competitors for CHXF. In my view, the SPDR S&P China ETF (GXC) is one of the most broadly diversified China ETFs and should have been included in the comparisons. Its inclusion wouldn't have forced much alteration to the points WisdomTree was trying to make and would have made the comparisons more credible.

The near zero exposure to the Health Care sector is a fact of life for China equities, as FXI and MCHI also have weightings of 1% or less. The Global X suite of China sector ETFs does not include a Health Care fund. GXC shows above-average diversification in this area also, as its underlying index has a 2.2% Health Care weighting.

Disclosure covering writer, editor, and publisher: No positions in any of the securities mentioned. No positions in any of the companies or ETF sponsors mentioned. No income, revenue, or other compensation (either directly or indirectly) received from, or on behalf of, any of the companies or ETF sponsors mentioned.
