Milford?s Mike Tracy threw a two-hit shutout while striking out eight and walking two as visiting Post 59 eliminated Grafton Hill with a 4-0 victory at Tivnan Field in Worcester on Wednesday night in the second game of their best-of-three Zone 4 Legion playoff series.

Ashland hosts Malden on Thursday in its regular season finale starting at 5:45 p.m. Post 77 is looking to finish in the top four of Zone 5 to qualify for the state playoffs.

"This was a huge win for us," said Ashland manager Dan Sullivan. "This keeps us in the hunt for one more night anyway. We have to win (vs. Malden) and we?ll need some help."

With the game tied 3-3, Ben Pelleiko led off the Ashland seventh with a single, moved to second on a wild pitch and to third and on Kyle Goulet?s ground out before scoring the winning run on Thurber?s hit.

After Medford tied it 2-2 in the fifth, Post 77 retook the lead in the bottom of the fifth when Goulet scored on a wild pitch. Medford tied it 3-3 in the top of the seventh.

Ashland starter Evan Park worked 6 2/3 innings, scattering 10 hits, allowing three earned runs and two walks while striking out four. With runners on second and third, reliever Ben Smith got the last out of the game on a line out to second to notch the win.

Couple celebrates 70th wedding anniversary at Kennywood

For families, Kennywood usually means making memories, but one family started making memories at the amusement park in 1927, and continues that tradition today.

Gene Williams is a retired Air Force colonel, a retired preacher and a 94-year-old kid. He has been coming to Kennywood since the 1920s.

Williams makes it to the park just about every year, despite living in Texas. He doesn't come alone, though. He still brings his 90-year-old bride, Martha, with him.

"Every year," she told Weather Watch 4 meteorologist Ray Petelin. "He was in the military for 21 years, and we would come home on leave, and the whole family -- mother, brothers and sisters and their children -- we all came," said Martha Williams.

In addition to the rides, Kennywood is also a place known for budding summer romances. Gene and Martha's love story is likely one of the longest the amusement park has seen, as this year, they are celebrating 70 years of marriage. They could think of no better place to be.

Gene Williams conveniently can?t remember if Martha was the first girl he ever brought to Kennywood, but he said she is his favorite.

One thing the couple can?t agree on is which ride is the best. Gene Williams likes the Racer, while his wife thinks the Thunderbolt is the best. He even thinks the Racer is the most romantic, but not because of the roller coaster.

"Nothing about it was romantic. Just being together is," he said.

Even at 94 and 90, respectively, Gene and Martha hope to be back.

"If we're able to come, we'll be here," Martha Williams said.

The couple has two children, five grandchildren, 13 great-grandchildren and 16 great-great grandchildren. With a family that big, this Kennywood love story will make lots of memories.

SEC accuses Texas man of running Bitcoin Ponzi scheme

A Texas man is in trouble with the feds for allegedly ripping off investors via a Bitcoin-inspired Ponzi scheme.

The SEC announced on Tuesday that it has charged Trendon Shavers, the founder and operator of Bitcoin Savings and Trust, with several violations of federal law.

Shavers reportedly raised at least 700,000 Bitcoin in investments through his company in 2011 and 2012. At that time, his Bitcoin investments were worth $4.5 million. Today, they're worth more than $60 million.

The government accuses Shavers of generating all that money by promising investors 7 percent in interest each week for buying Bitcoin "off the radar" or in large amounts. But in actuality, says the SEC, Shaver was running a Ponzi scheme in which he used Bitcoin from his new investors to cover interest payments and withdrawals on outstanding investments. Further, Shavers allegedly used the Bitcoin from his investors to trade in his own personal account and to pay off his own personal expenses.

"Fraudsters are not beyond the reach of the SEC just because they use Bitcoin or another virtual currency to mislead investors and violate the federal securities laws," Andrew Calamari, director of the SEC's New York Regional Office, said in a statement. "Shavers preyed on investors in an online forum by claiming his investments carried no risk and huge profits for them while his true intentions were rooted in nothing more than personal greed."

The SEC is seeking a court order to freeze the assets of Shavers and his company. The agency is also looking for permanent injunctions, financial penalties, and the disgorgement of the ill-gotten gains with prejudgment interest, which means Shavers would have to return all the money he obtained along with interest should he be found guilty.

??Improving the management of people with a family history of breast cancer in primary care: before and after study of audit-based education

In England, guidance from National Institute for Clinical Excellence (NICE) states women with a family history of breast cancer presenting to primary care should be reassured or referred. We reviewed the evidence for interventions that might be applied in primary care and conducted an audit of whether low risk women are correctly advised and flagged.

Methods: We conducted a literature review to identify modifiable risk factors. We extracted routinely collected data from the computerised medical record systems of 6 general practices (population approximately 30,000); of the variables identified in the guidance.

We implemented a quality improvement (QI) intervention called audit-based education (ABE) comparing participant practices with guidelines and each other before and after; we report odds ratios (OR) of any change in data recording.

Results: The review revealed evidence for advising on: diet, weight control, physical exercise, and alcohol. The proportion of patients with recordings of family history of: disease, neoplasms, and breast cancer were: 39.3%, 5.1% and 1.3% respectively.

There was no significant change in the recording of family history of disease or cancer; OR 1.02 (95% CI 0.98-1.06); and 1.08 (95% CI 0.99-1.17) respectively. Recording of alcohol consumption and smoking both increased significantly; OR 1.36 (95% CI 1.30-1.43); and 1.42 (95% CI 1.27-1.60) respectively.

Recording lifestyle advice fell; OR 0.84 (95% CI 0.81-0.88).

Conclusions: The study informs about current data recording and willingness to engage in ABE. Recording of risk factors improved after the intervention.

Further QI is needed to achieve adherence to current guidance.

Obama rallies faithful ahead of August recess

WASHINGTON (AP) ? His second-term agenda on the line, President Barack Obama urged his most ardent supporters Monday to mount a summertime show of support that can rival any opposition Obama and Democrats may face from constituents next month. "We've got to get folks activated and involved," Obama declared.

Joined by top Democratic leaders, Obama addressed a non-profit group formed expressly to push his agenda, imploring its volunteers and donors not to let up the pressure in his waning years in office. Alluding to his own limitations despite being re-elected, he acknowledged "things still get stuck here in Washington" even when he delivers on his end.

"Naturally it's not going to be as full of razzmatazz as a campaign. First of all, we don't have a billion dollars to spend," Obama said. "Nonetheless, in some ways this stuff is more important."

But even with his last election behind him, the event had a campaign feel as Obama stood before about 300 supporters of Organizing for Action, a group formed from the remnants of the president's 2012 campaign with the goal of building public support for his second-term priorities.

In barely a week, lawmakers will fan out across the country, returning to their home districts for the annual summer break. At town hall meetings and picnics and public events, they'll hear firsthand from constituents ? most of whom, polls show, have had it with Washington and incessant partisan fighting.

With a tough path ahead for Obama's major goals ? including an immigration overhaul, the economy and the rollout of his health care law ? his supporters want to ensure that lawmakers of both parties return to Washington with a mandate to work with Obama. So, OFA, with a presidential assist, is seeking to get activists energized and ready to speak up.

The top Democrat in the House, Minority Leader Nancy Pelosi of California, called OFA's supporters "ambassadors who will reach out to the public to make sure they understand what is at stake."

"Nothing is more eloquent to a member of Congress than the voice of his or her own constituent," Pelosi said.

And Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid, D-Nev., whose efforts to enact Obama's priorities have run up against opposition from the Republican minority, vowed not to let up the fight either. He poked a bit of fun at his GOP counterpart, Minority Leader Mitch McConnell of Kentucky, who is expecting to face a primary challenge in his own re-election next year.

"He tried to make love to the tea party ? and they didn't like it," Reid said.

But for all the buoyant talk ? Pelosi spoke of Democrats possibly retaking the House next year ? the proactive move to rally the party faithful may also reflect a lurking concern for Obama and Democrats that the August recess could give opponents an opening. Democrats say they're anticipating a concerted effort by conservatives to show lawmakers they want Obama's agenda stopped in its tracks ? and that they'll punish those who go along with his proposals in the next election.

After all, it was during the same period in Obama's first term when a burgeoning tea party, incensed by Obama's health care proposals, showed up in full force at town halls in 2009. A year later, Obama's party lost control of the House and hemorrhaged seats in the Senate, dealing a major blow to Obama's agenda in what the president described as a "shellacking."

Republicans said Obama's time would be better spent finding a way to work with Congress rather than reverting to campaign tactics to knock Republicans.

"The president needs help spinning Americans during August recess because his speeches haven't started hiring," said Republican National Committee spokeswoman Kirsten Kukowski.

Democrats are trying to build momentum on a range of issues including an immigration overhaul, which cleared the Senate but faces an uncertain future in the House; expanded gun background checks, which stalled in Congress; and measures to curb climate change, which the president is pushing independently from Congress.

Obama is also working to implement complex elements of his health care law despite continued resistance from Republicans and headaches over delays and glitches.

Jon Carson, OFA's executive director, said the group would celebrate Obama's Aug. 4 birthday by "celebrating and defending and explaining and promoting" his health care law, then hold events the next week to call out lawmakers who question man-made climate change.

The group's chairman, Jim Messina, who served as Obama's 2012 campaign manager, noted the immigration bill garnered bipartisan support in the Senate. "Now we're going to force it through the House," Messina declared.

Obama is also revving up for a series of speeches starting Wednesday aimed at building support ahead of upcoming budget deadlines and a likely battle with Republicans over the nation's borrowing limit.

"I've got a little over 1,200 days left in office," Obama said to melancholy moans from his die-hard supporters. "I am going to spend every waking minute of every one of those days thinking about ? and then acting upon ? any good ideas out there that are going to help ordinary Americans succeed."

Organizing for Action, which is run by former White House and campaign aides, has tried to build public pressure on lawmakers to enact Obama's second-term agenda. The group raised more than $8 million between April and June.

Happy Birthday To Alex Wilhelm, Our Newest TechCrunch Writer

Screen Shot 2013-07-22 at 3.29.01 PMAlex Wilhelm is turning 24 today, but he’s been writing about tech since his sophomore year of college. So he’s joining us now with four solid years at The Next Web, where he wrote about Microsoft, finance, tech policy and the broad range of startups that have helped define this era. He’ll continue writing about those same topics and will also be focusing on monetization on mobile, and the changing nature of online software business models. It’s worth adding that Alex has become a bit of a monster on Twitter, regularly pumping out a flood of at-replies to anyone who comes near… including to the official accounts of large content sites like The Huffington Post and BuzzFeed*. This is fine by us. In fact, since TechCrunch is such a freewheeling place anyway, we expect him to really start going to town here, like so many others have before him. Please wish our newest TechCrunch writer a happy birthday and warm welcome. (Check out?these?tumblrs?somebody made of him at-replying if you dare.?The obligatory disclosure about us having a parent company in common with HuffPo.) Russia releases Putin critic Alexei Navalny on bail after mass protests

Valentina Svistunova / EPA

Russian opposition figure Alexei Navalny embraces his wife Yulia after he was freed by Regional court of Kirov region following a protest of prosecutor's office in Kirov, Russia, on Friday.

By Gabriela Baczynska, Reuters

KIROV, Russia -- Russia unexpectedly freed opposition leader Alexei Navalny on bail on Friday, bending to the will of thousands of protesters who denounced his five-year jail sentence as a crude attempt by President Vladimir Putin to silence him.

In a ruling that points to Kremlin uncertainty over how to handle Navalny's case and revived protests, a judge approved an unusual prosecution request to release him while he awaits the outcome of an appeal.

The anti-corruption campaigner's movements will be restricted to Moscow but he proclaimed the ruling, one day after he was convicted of theft, as a victory for people power.

"I am very grateful to all the people who supported us, all the people who went to (protest in Moscow's) Manezh Square and other squares," the 37-year-old said, rushing across the court to hug his wife after he was released from a glass courtroom cage.

"We understand perfectly well what has happened now. It's an absolutely unique phenomenon in Russian justice," he said in the court in Kirov, an industrial city 550 miles northeast of Moscow.

People poured onto the streets of big Russian cities to protest on Thursday evening after Navalny was convicted of stealing at least $494,000 from a timber firm when he was advising the Kirov regional governor in 2009.

Police said more than 200 people were detained in St Petersburg and Moscow although there were no big clashes.

Navalny says the case was politically motivated and intended to sideline him as a political threat to Putin, even though his support is limited outside the big cities and opinion polls show the president is still Russia's most popular politician.

Navalny led anti-Putin protests which attracted tens of thousands last year before they started to fade when the former KGB spy was elected to a six-year third term as president.

The decision to release him could be a political maneuver to head off social unrest. Some political analysts said the Kremlin, and the business and security community around it, looked divided over Navalny.

Russia's most notable anti-corruption campaigner and opposition leader has been found guilty of embezzlement and sentenced to five years in prison. The U.S. ambassador said the trial was apparently politically motivated. Channel Four's Jonathan Rugman reports

"There really is a split in the elite," one analyst, Ella Paneyakh, said in an online comment. "And it seems there will be no peaceful outcome."

The Kremlin has not responded to calls for comment on the verdict and said nothing about Friday's ruling.

The United States and European Union voiced concern over Navalny's conviction, saying it raised questions about the rule of law and Russia's treatment of Putin's opponents.

The White House called it part of a "disturbing trend aimed at suppressing dissent."

Russian shares fell on Thursday on concerns the conviction may provoke unrest, after a case that led to comparisons with the political "show trials" under Soviet leader Josef Stalin.

At least 3,000 people protested near the Kremlin in Moscow on Thursday under a heavy police presence, blocking main streets and shouting "Freedom" and "Putin is a thief."

Police plunged into the crowd to pluck out people holding Navalny portraits. A police official said about 50 were detained, but activists said the number had reached 169 as smaller groups continued to protest past midnight.

At least 1,000 people protested in St. Petersburg, where police said about 40 were detained, and smaller rallies were held in other cities.

Egypt Revolutionary Socialist position on Egypt's recent coup

A senior member of Egypt's Revolutionary Socialists explains their position on recent events in Egypt.

By Dan Murphy,?Staff writer / July 20, 2013

An article we ran on Egypt's love-in for the military yesterday stated that Egypt's Revolutionary Socialists had surprisingly supported the July 3 coup that deposed Egyptian President Mohamed Morsi. Hossam el-Hamalawy, a member of the group's politburo and an old friend from Cairo, writes that was incorrect. He sent in an explanation of their position. We've adjusted the original story, but I thought it would be fair to share Hossam's explanation in full, since the state of politics in Egypt is sufficiently fraught for its participants even without our errors being heaped into the mix. His letter in full and unedited below. -DM

By Hossam el-Hamalawy, politburo member of Egypt's Revolutionary Socialists:

Your article "In Egypt, lonely voices warn of too much love for the military", implied that the Egyptian Revolutionary Socialists (the group I belong to) were in the pro-military camp. This is incorrect and the anti-Morsi opposition camp should not be lumped up in one basket.Unlike the majority of the opposition groups, the Egyptian Revolutionary Socialists have had a clear position "Against the MBs, Against the folool (remnants of the Mubarak regime), Against SCAF", as a slogan reasserted in our marches, statements and articles. It was not a popular stand with many in the opposition and the streets, yet we were clear about it.

We never sat down nor negotiated with the military at any point before or after the 25 Jan revolution (Editor's note; Egypt's uprising against Hosni Mubarak began on Jan. 25, 2011). In fact, the RS was the first revolutionary group to warn from the army's role in the events in a statement from Tahrir Square as early as 1 Feb 2011. Our cadres were subject later to arrests and torture in military prisons, and our group was singled out in the media for a long time as "anti-army conspirators who want to destroy the state." Such smearing campaign, ironically, was spearheaded by the MBs publications and Islamist TV satellite channels.

Hence, I find it bizarre to be labelled as "military coup supporters" in your article... as bizarre as the accusation we also hear from other political groups in Egypt that we are "MB supporters" because we refuse to stand with the military.

Make no mistake, the RS was part of the effort and the street mobilization to overthrow Morsi in the run up to 30 June and later. Yet, our position, expressed in our official statements, have made it clear this was not the end goal solely. While we regard Morsi as murderer whose legitimacy has been lost, long before the Tamarrod campaign, he should be tried together with Mubarak, Tantawi and the SCAF generals in one cage.

Beacon focus of Boeing fire probe; investors on edge

By Rhys Jones and Alwyn Scott

LONDON/SEATTLE (Reuters) - British aviation investigators identified an emergency beacon made by Honeywell International Inc as a likely source of last week's blaze on a Boeing Co 787 Dreamliner and called for it to be turned off, spurring a rally in Boeing shares by relieved investors.

Concerns about the carbon composite jet soon resurfaced, however, after a Japan Airlines 787 returned to Boston's Logan airport a with a possible faulty fuel pump.

A spokesman for the U.S. Federal Aviation Administration said that incident was not an emergency, but nervous investors sent Boeing shares down 1.5 percent in afterhours trade. Japan Airlines spokesman Hisanori Iizuka said the pilot decided to turn back "as a precaution."

The 787 program has been plagued by problems since January, with aircraft grounded after the overheating of lithium-ion back-up batteries.

UK officials said the fire at the parked Ethiopian Airlines at Heathrow was not related to the January incidents. The Air Accidents Investigation Branch (AAIB) said a locator beacon and its lithium-based battery was the only equipment on the plane that was near the fire and had the power to start it, and called regulators to review the use of these beacons.

Boeing said the locator beacon is not required by U.S. Federal Aviation Administration regulations, although some other nations do mandate their use. The plane maker said it would be removed from its newest model plane.

"ELTs are not required as part of the airplane design. There was no requirement to operate the ELTs during 787 flight test," said Boeing spokesman Marc Birtel.

The beacons, also called emergency locator transmitters (ELTs) are powered by non-rechargeable, lithium-manganese batteries used for decades in products like digital cameras, walkie-talkies and pacemakers.

NO QUICK REMOVAL

For now, airlines will keep flying with their emergency beacons in place until the FAA instructs them to do otherwise. With most big jets closely monitored on radar and with other means for rescuers to locate downed jets, the beacons, required in most parts of the world, are not critical for safe flight.

The AAIB has left it up to the FAA to decide on removing the beacons, said a Japan's Civil Aviation Bureau (JCAB) official.

"Things won't moved forward until the FAA makes a decision," he said, declining to be identified as he is not authorised to talk to the media.

Japanese airline ANA, which owns 20 of the 68 Dreamliners currently operating, said it would await instructions from the JCAB.

In Washington, the FAA said it was reviewing the report, which pointing to a lack of fire detection or suppression in the space above the cabin said, "had this event occurred in flight it could pose a significant safety concern."

RAIN IN THE PLANE

The AAIB said it is still unclear whether the fire onboard the Ethiopian jet was triggered by a malfunction in the beacon's battery or some external force - such as an electrical short circuit - and said the probe would continue.

While the UK report focused on the beacon made by U.S. conglomerate Honeywell, aviation experts said 787's higher humidity, which helps keeps passengers more comfortable, may have been an issue. Water can conduct electricity, so high moisture levels could increase the likelihood of short circuits.

"The investigators are looking at everything, humidity, condensation and ... how things are installed," said one industry source.

They are checking if there was enough insulation to prevent moisture from condensing and short circuiting systems such as the beacon, said the source, who was not authorized to speak publicly.

A source close to Boeing, speaking on condition that he not be named, said the 787 may need better isolation of electrical components from the plane's high humidity, something industry people refer to as "rain in the plane".

"There's nothing about this finding that indicates a lack of safety with the plane, but on the other hand there's no conclusive proof that a system unrelated to the plane is to blame," said Richard Aboulafia, aviation consultant with the Virginia-based Teal Group.

Analyst Yan Derocles of Paris-based Oddo Securities agreed. "We have to wait for the conclusions and at that point it could be a problem for Boeing, because the succession of incidents could chip away at confidence in the 787," he said.

HONEYWELL

Honeywell pledged to help Boeing and the airlines as needed, but cautioned that it was premature to jump to conclusions about the fire. It said it did not expect any financial impact from the AAIB's recommended action.

The battery cells in the beacon showed signs of "disruption" the AAIB report said. "It is not clear however, whether the combustion in the area of the ELT was initiated by a release of energy within the batteries or by an external mechanism such as an electrical short."

The battery linked to the London fire is made by Newark, New York-based Ultralife Corp, according to an industry source. Ultralife did not return calls or emails seeking comment. Its shares fell 1.8 percent to $3.76.

The AAIB said Honeywell had produced some 6,000 ELTs of the same design, which are fitted to a wide range of aircraft, and this had been the only significant "thermal incident."

UNRELATED

UK investigator AAIB said last week's fire was unrelated to the January incidents on 787s that grounded the advanced carbon composite aircraft for more than three months.

Investigators have yet to determine what prompted the batteries involved in those cases to melt down. Boeing resolved the issue by encasing the battery on a fireproof steel box, and cutting a vent in the plane to dump smoke from any overheating batteries in the future.

The fuel pump warning on the JAL flight from Boston on Thursday was unconnected with either the melted batteries or the emergency beacons, the carrier said.

Flight JL007, bound for Tokyo with 184 passengers on board, got a maintenance message related to the fuel pump about three hours after leaving Boston, JAL said. The plane landed safely back at the airport at 6:16 p.m. (2216 GMT), and there was no sign of smoke, it added.

Shares of Boeing closed 2.7 percent higher at $107.63, near the high of $108.15 reached a week ago before the fire. The Boston incident then saw the shares slip to $106. Honeywell shares rose 0.6 percent on Thursday to close at $82.97.

JAL's shares dipped 0.9 percent in early trading in Tokyo, with ANA unchanged from yesterday's close, compared with a 1.1 percent decline in the benchmark Nikkei 225 index.

Fish study conducted at Naticook Lake - Cabinet.com

News

Friday, July 19, 2013

By LORETTA JACKSON

Staff Writer

Four biologists from the New Hampshire Fish & Game department boarded a compact research vessel and headed out upon Naticook Lake in Wasserman Park, 116 Naticook Road, as darkness fell on Wednesday, June 19.

Their mission was to secure a sampling of the fish in the lake and perform an assessment of the fish population?s health and its numbers.

Gabe Gries, a fisheries biologist, began the sampling activities at Naticook Lake by taking note of lake conditions, wind direction, air temperature and water temp. The lake temperature was 74 degrees. No gusts rippled the water.

A low-voltage zap from an electronic monitoring device momentarily stunned the groups of fish nearest the boat and bright lights allowed the biologists to see the fish. Gries and the other biologists used long-handled nets to scoop the fish from the water. The catch of hundreds of fish was counted, inspected for general health and released unharmed. Some fish were weighed. Their lengths were recorded. Others had a few scales scraped off for later microscopic inspection to determine how old the fish were and how fast they were growing.

The men aboard the motor boat recorded populations of yellow perch, large-mouth bass, chain pickerel, yellow bullhead catfish and brown bullhead, also known as hornpout, mud pout or mud cat. They also found black crappie, a variety of sunfish that has a rounded, greenish-black body and silvery sides.

In addition, they counted an abundance of pumpkinseed sunfish and bluegill sunfish. The pumpkinseed is a colorful freshwater fish often called a sunny, or a pond perch. It has a bright red dot on each of its black gill covers. The crimson markings make it easy to identify. The pumpkinseed sunfish, one of the most common catches for Merrimack anglers, generally measures 5-8 inches but may reach 10? long.

New Hampshire record breakers are listed on the state?s Fish & Game website (www.wildlife.state.nh.us). None are from Naticook Lake. Nevertheless, a pair of pumpkinseeds taken from Lake Winnipesaukee are tied for the record at 13.6 pounds. The record-holder for bluegill sunfish, at 11.25 inches and 2-pounds 64-ounces, is a fish taken from Goodwin?s Pond in the town of Acworth, in Sullivan County.

Gries is the Warmwater Project leader for New Hampshire Fish & Game Department?s Region 4, a region that includes Southwestern New Hampshire. Region 4 is one of six regions designated as state Fish & Game law-enforcement districts. Region 4 headquarters is in Keene, New Hampshire.

Biologist colleagues aboard the boat that evening included Ben Nugent, who works from Fish & Game?s headquarters in Concord. Nugent has eight years with the organization. Andy Schafermeyer, an 18-year veteran, was on hand. He is from the Region 1 office in Lancaster. Region 1 covers the northernmost third of New Hampshire. Jason Carrier, a fisheries biologist for 10 years, is from the Region 4 office, as is biologist Gries. The team will study many lakes in the course of a year.

?In general, we found a typical, well-rounded warmwater fish population,? Gries said. ?Yellow perch numbers were low. Largemouth bass were numerous, but fish were generally small with most fish sampled between six and 10 inches, and no fish greater than 16 inches.?

Variables impacting the size and numbers of fish in the lake include the population?s diets, habitats, life cycles and predator activity upon the fish by turtles, herons, snakes and frogs.

Lake Naticook has many grassy banks from which anglers can fish. There also are wooden docks at the town beach that make for comfortable fishing spots when anglers bring a folding chair. Canoes and kayaks provide others a means of getting close to potential hot spots.

Currently, Fish & Game reports that there are 1,105 licensed Merrimack residents enjoying the sport of fishing. Bedford boasts 1,042 licensed fishermen, and women. Other towns have their fishing aficionados.

The New Hampshire Fish & Game Department?s online site (www.wildlife.state.nh.us) notes that state residents age 16 or more are required to obtain a fishing license, a permit that currently costs $35. Want to try fishing for a day? Purchase a one-day license for $10. Want to try it for a lifetime? A lifetime license is available with costs varying according to the age of the applicant. For example, a lifetime fishing license for a person of age 16 costs 976.67, whereas a person of age 36 will pay $723.72, and a person of age 67 will pay $35. As in other activities, such as operating an automobile, age and experience count toward discounts.

In addition to the traditional fishing license, several other types of fishing licenses offer benefits to people in special circumstances. A blind person can obtain a free fishing permit. A complimentary fishing permit can be had by a person at a nursing home or veterans? hospital. The complimentary license also is available to a person who is developmentally challenged. In addition, A disabled veteran is welcome to a free fishing license. Various application procedures and occasional processing fees apply.

Traditional fishing licenses are available at many approved licensing agencies. They can be obtained from Wal-Mart, 85 Route 101A in Amherst, and from Bedford?s Wal-Mart, 17 Colby Court. Licenses for fishing also are available at Merrimack Firearms on 416 Daniel Webster Highway; The County Store, 321 Nashua St., in Milford; The Sports Authority, 213 Daniel Webster Highway in Nashua, and many other places.

The New Hampshire Fish & Game Department is a supported through proceeds of hunting licenses, fishing licenses, donations and federal grants. It?s mission is one of guardianship over the state?s fish, wildlife and marine resources.

Folks interested in fishing will find online a wealth of information including weekly fishing reports. Also available are fishing guides, depth charts for lakes and ponds, suggested fishing locations by species, plus online links to an abundance of resources related to fishing, hunting, boating, wildlife and other topics.

Regulators tell Great River Energy to rethink coal

ST. PAUL, Minn. (AP) -

Minnesota regulators have told Great River Energy to rethink its dependence on burning coal to generate electricity.

The unusual decision by the Public Utilities Commission has no immediate impact on the power supplier, but it's another step in the transition toward the use of more renewable energy in Minnesota.

Three of the five commissioners voted Wednesday to reject Great River Energy's long-range plan, mainly because it did not consider whether Minnesota's second-largest power company should close one or more of its coal plants. Environmental groups and some major customers accused the utility of making bad investments in new fossil fuel plants that helped drive up rates 58 percent over seven years.

Great River Energy provides wholesale electricity to local co-ops in Minnesota and Wisconsin that serve nearly 1.7 million people.
