Montgomery mayor nixes re-election bid

MONTGOMERY ? Longtime Mayor Marilyn Michelini said after 25 years in political office she will be retiring in the spring.

Michelini began her political career in 1987 when she was elected a village trustee. She ran for mayor in 2000, and has held the position ever since.

Trustee Bill Keck, who has lived in the village for four decades, said he is interested in running for the mayor?s spot.

?I would like to move the village forward but in a different capacity,? Keck said when asked why he is seeking the village?s top post. ?I think cost containment and staff levels need to be looked at.?

Keck, a widow with two grown daughters, has served as a trustee for the past 20 years. He works at the Heartland Blood Center.

Local businessman Greg Nelson said he is interested in the mayoral spot, but would defer to Keck.

?I took out petitions for mayor and trustee,? Nelson said. ?I have no problem working with Bill. I want to make sure it is someone who has experience and can steer.?

?We have to look at spending in the village. We don?t have a rainy day fund. If something major breaks we have no cash reserve. We also need to look at staffing levels,? he said.

?We have an aging infrastructure. We spent $4.5 million over budget on the village hall. We all have to pay for it.?

Nelson has been a village resident for two decades. He and his wife have two children. Nelson owns Genesis-POS, a provider of software solutions for grocery stores.

Incumbent Trustees Denny Lee and Andy Kaczmarek both said they plan to run again in the spring when their terms expire.

Several newcomers are planning to run for trustee spots as well. Josh Salisbury, Steve Jungermann, Colleen Nedrow and Ben Brozska have all taken out petitions to get their names on the ballot.

Brozska is a resident of the Fairfield subdivision, where he serves as a member of the neighborhood watch.

He and his wife have been residents of the village for 8 years and have three children. Brozska works as a manager in fulfillment services for Lions Club International.

Jungermann and his wife Donna have been residents of the village for the past five years.

?I think the village is starting to move down the wrong path. A majority of the trustees are trying to be managers,? he said.

Nedrow, a photographer, and her husband have four children and have lived in the area for two years.

Salisbury lost a race for the Village Board in the last election. A 30-year resident of the village, he works for the Kane County Sheriff?s Office.

The village clerk position also will be up for election. Heidi Dziedzic, who was appointed to the clerk position earlier this year intends to seek election to the post.
