Couple celebrates 70th wedding anniversary at Kennywood

For families, Kennywood usually means making memories, but one family started making memories at the amusement park in 1927, and continues that tradition today.

Gene Williams is a retired Air Force colonel, a retired preacher and a 94-year-old kid. He has been coming to Kennywood since the 1920s.

Williams makes it to the park just about every year, despite living in Texas. He doesn't come alone, though. He still brings his 90-year-old bride, Martha, with him.

"Every year," she told Weather Watch 4 meteorologist Ray Petelin. "He was in the military for 21 years, and we would come home on leave, and the whole family -- mother, brothers and sisters and their children -- we all came," said Martha Williams.

In addition to the rides, Kennywood is also a place known for budding summer romances. Gene and Martha's love story is likely one of the longest the amusement park has seen, as this year, they are celebrating 70 years of marriage. They could think of no better place to be.

Gene Williams conveniently can?t remember if Martha was the first girl he ever brought to Kennywood, but he said she is his favorite.

One thing the couple can?t agree on is which ride is the best. Gene Williams likes the Racer, while his wife thinks the Thunderbolt is the best. He even thinks the Racer is the most romantic, but not because of the roller coaster.

"Nothing about it was romantic. Just being together is," he said.

Even at 94 and 90, respectively, Gene and Martha hope to be back.

"If we're able to come, we'll be here," Martha Williams said.

The couple has two children, five grandchildren, 13 great-grandchildren and 16 great-great grandchildren. With a family that big, this Kennywood love story will make lots of memories.

SEC accuses Texas man of running Bitcoin Ponzi scheme

A Texas man is in trouble with the feds for allegedly ripping off investors via a Bitcoin-inspired Ponzi scheme.

The SEC announced on Tuesday that it has charged Trendon Shavers, the founder and operator of Bitcoin Savings and Trust, with several violations of federal law.

Shavers reportedly raised at least 700,000 Bitcoin in investments through his company in 2011 and 2012. At that time, his Bitcoin investments were worth $4.5 million. Today, they're worth more than $60 million.

The government accuses Shavers of generating all that money by promising investors 7 percent in interest each week for buying Bitcoin "off the radar" or in large amounts. But in actuality, says the SEC, Shaver was running a Ponzi scheme in which he used Bitcoin from his new investors to cover interest payments and withdrawals on outstanding investments. Further, Shavers allegedly used the Bitcoin from his investors to trade in his own personal account and to pay off his own personal expenses.

"Fraudsters are not beyond the reach of the SEC just because they use Bitcoin or another virtual currency to mislead investors and violate the federal securities laws," Andrew Calamari, director of the SEC's New York Regional Office, said in a statement. "Shavers preyed on investors in an online forum by claiming his investments carried no risk and huge profits for them while his true intentions were rooted in nothing more than personal greed."

The SEC is seeking a court order to freeze the assets of Shavers and his company. The agency is also looking for permanent injunctions, financial penalties, and the disgorgement of the ill-gotten gains with prejudgment interest, which means Shavers would have to return all the money he obtained along with interest should he be found guilty.

Improving the management of people with a family history of breast cancer in primary care: before and after study of audit-based education

??Improving the management of people with a family history of breast cancer in primary care: before and after study of audit-based education

In England, guidance from National Institute for Clinical Excellence (NICE) states women with a family history of breast cancer presenting to primary care should be reassured or referred. We reviewed the evidence for interventions that might be applied in primary care and conducted an audit of whether low risk women are correctly advised and flagged.

Methods: We conducted a literature review to identify modifiable risk factors. We extracted routinely collected data from the computerised medical record systems of 6 general practices (population approximately 30,000); of the variables identified in the guidance.

We implemented a quality improvement (QI) intervention called audit-based education (ABE) comparing participant practices with guidelines and each other before and after; we report odds ratios (OR) of any change in data recording.

Results: The review revealed evidence for advising on: diet, weight control, physical exercise, and alcohol. The proportion of patients with recordings of family history of: disease, neoplasms, and breast cancer were: 39.3%, 5.1% and 1.3% respectively.

There was no significant change in the recording of family history of disease or cancer; OR 1.02 (95% CI 0.98-1.06); and 1.08 (95% CI 0.99-1.17) respectively. Recording of alcohol consumption and smoking both increased significantly; OR 1.36 (95% CI 1.30-1.43); and 1.42 (95% CI 1.27-1.60) respectively.

Recording lifestyle advice fell; OR 0.84 (95% CI 0.81-0.88).

Conclusions: The study informs about current data recording and willingness to engage in ABE. Recording of risk factors improved after the intervention.

Further QI is needed to achieve adherence to current guidance.

Obama rallies faithful ahead of August recess

WASHINGTON (AP) ? His second-term agenda on the line, President Barack Obama urged his most ardent supporters Monday to mount a summertime show of support that can rival any opposition Obama and Democrats may face from constituents next month. "We've got to get folks activated and involved," Obama declared.

Joined by top Democratic leaders, Obama addressed a non-profit group formed expressly to push his agenda, imploring its volunteers and donors not to let up the pressure in his waning years in office. Alluding to his own limitations despite being re-elected, he acknowledged "things still get stuck here in Washington" even when he delivers on his end.

"Naturally it's not going to be as full of razzmatazz as a campaign. First of all, we don't have a billion dollars to spend," Obama said. "Nonetheless, in some ways this stuff is more important."

But even with his last election behind him, the event had a campaign feel as Obama stood before about 300 supporters of Organizing for Action, a group formed from the remnants of the president's 2012 campaign with the goal of building public support for his second-term priorities.

In barely a week, lawmakers will fan out across the country, returning to their home districts for the annual summer break. At town hall meetings and picnics and public events, they'll hear firsthand from constituents ? most of whom, polls show, have had it with Washington and incessant partisan fighting.

With a tough path ahead for Obama's major goals ? including an immigration overhaul, the economy and the rollout of his health care law ? his supporters want to ensure that lawmakers of both parties return to Washington with a mandate to work with Obama. So, OFA, with a presidential assist, is seeking to get activists energized and ready to speak up.

The top Democrat in the House, Minority Leader Nancy Pelosi of California, called OFA's supporters "ambassadors who will reach out to the public to make sure they understand what is at stake."

"Nothing is more eloquent to a member of Congress than the voice of his or her own constituent," Pelosi said.

And Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid, D-Nev., whose efforts to enact Obama's priorities have run up against opposition from the Republican minority, vowed not to let up the fight either. He poked a bit of fun at his GOP counterpart, Minority Leader Mitch McConnell of Kentucky, who is expecting to face a primary challenge in his own re-election next year.

"He tried to make love to the tea party ? and they didn't like it," Reid said.

But for all the buoyant talk ? Pelosi spoke of Democrats possibly retaking the House next year ? the proactive move to rally the party faithful may also reflect a lurking concern for Obama and Democrats that the August recess could give opponents an opening. Democrats say they're anticipating a concerted effort by conservatives to show lawmakers they want Obama's agenda stopped in its tracks ? and that they'll punish those who go along with his proposals in the next election.

After all, it was during the same period in Obama's first term when a burgeoning tea party, incensed by Obama's health care proposals, showed up in full force at town halls in 2009. A year later, Obama's party lost control of the House and hemorrhaged seats in the Senate, dealing a major blow to Obama's agenda in what the president described as a "shellacking."

Republicans said Obama's time would be better spent finding a way to work with Congress rather than reverting to campaign tactics to knock Republicans.

"The president needs help spinning Americans during August recess because his speeches haven't started hiring," said Republican National Committee spokeswoman Kirsten Kukowski.

Democrats are trying to build momentum on a range of issues including an immigration overhaul, which cleared the Senate but faces an uncertain future in the House; expanded gun background checks, which stalled in Congress; and measures to curb climate change, which the president is pushing independently from Congress.

Obama is also working to implement complex elements of his health care law despite continued resistance from Republicans and headaches over delays and glitches.

Jon Carson, OFA's executive director, said the group would celebrate Obama's Aug. 4 birthday by "celebrating and defending and explaining and promoting" his health care law, then hold events the next week to call out lawmakers who question man-made climate change.

The group's chairman, Jim Messina, who served as Obama's 2012 campaign manager, noted the immigration bill garnered bipartisan support in the Senate. "Now we're going to force it through the House," Messina declared.

Obama is also revving up for a series of speeches starting Wednesday aimed at building support ahead of upcoming budget deadlines and a likely battle with Republicans over the nation's borrowing limit.

"I've got a little over 1,200 days left in office," Obama said to melancholy moans from his die-hard supporters. "I am going to spend every waking minute of every one of those days thinking about ? and then acting upon ? any good ideas out there that are going to help ordinary Americans succeed."

Organizing for Action, which is run by former White House and campaign aides, has tried to build public pressure on lawmakers to enact Obama's second-term agenda. The group raised more than $8 million between April and June.
