With the U.S. dollar /quotes/zigman/4868099/sampled USDJPY -0.0345% now testing the ?78 level, some major exporter shares moved lower, with Sony Corp. /quotes/zigman/197500 JP:6758 -2.11% /quotes/zigman/197524/quotes/nls/sne SNE -1.32% down 2.2%, Canon Inc. /quotes/zigman/192200 JP:7751 -2.65% /quotes/zigman/192225/quotes/nls/caj CAJ +0.65% losing 2.3%, Pioneer Corp. /quotes/zigman/196846 JP:6773 -2.97% /quotes/zigman/196851/quotes/nls/pncof PNCOF -35.19% off 2.5%, and Mazda Motor Corp. /quotes/zigman/195040 JP:7261 -3.03% /quotes/zigman/195045/quotes/nls/mzdaf MZDAF +4.72% falling 2%. Chip maker Renesas Electronics Corp. /quotes/zigman/326601 JP:6723 +1.59% /quotes/zigman/593649/quotes/nls/rnecy RNECY +40.24% remained bid-only in early trading, looking set for major gains after reports said a consortium of some of Japan's biggest manufacturers could soon make a bid for the firm. Shares of Nintendo Co. /quotes/zigman/195847 JP:7974 +0.72% /quotes/zigman/195853/quotes/nls/ntdof NTDOF -0.99% gave up opening gains to trade 0.3% lower despite reports from CNBC and AllThingsD that the firm's new Wii U videogame device is close to selling out ahead of its Nov. 18 arrival at U.S. stores. The row between Japan and China over a territorial dispute appeared to heat up, meanwhile, with Japan's prime minister warning Beijing that anti-Japanese protests in China could hurt that nation's economy. Steel makers, usually sensitive to developments in China, fell in early trade, with JFE Holdings Inc. /quotes/zigman/304502 JP:5411 -3.56% /quotes/zigman/304509/quotes/nls/jfeef JFEEF +0.28% losing 3.2%, Kobe Steel Ltd. /quotes/zigman/194440 JP:5406 -2.90% down 2.9% and Sumitomo Metal Industries Ltd. /quotes/zigman/197855 JP:5405 -3.23% /quotes/zigman/197865/quotes/nls/smmlf SMMLF -1.04% retreating 2.3%.
