Baylor No. 1 in women's basketball poll

Brittney Griner and Baylor are picking up right where they finished last season ? at No. 1.

The Lady Bears are ranked at the top of the preseason women's basketball poll by The Associated Press for the second straight year. Baylor had the No. 1 spot for the entire season last year en route to its second national championship and a 40-0 record.

"It's a humbling honor, which we'll embrace but it's just that an honor. It doesn't win basketball games. Our goal every year is to win championships," coach Kim Mulkey said.

Baylor received all 40 first-place votes Saturday from a national media panel. The Lady Bears, who return all five starters including the 6-foot-8 Griner, joined Texas (1985 and 1986) as the only Big 12 schools to start the season at No. 1 in consecutive years.

Connecticut, Duke, Stanford and Maryland round out the first five.

Coach Geno Auriemma has a lot of optimism about his team this season that has lost in the Final Four the last two years. He's telling anyone who will listen that his team is "really, really, really good," and he believes they can win it all, even though defending national champion Baylor returns Griner.

"If everyone expected us to go to the Final Four and contend for a national championship without Maya Moore, isn't the expectation level this year to go undefeated and win every game by 100," he joked last week. "So, I might as well say, 'Yeah, that's what we're going to do."

The Lady Bears and Huskies will play on Feb. 18.

Duke returns a talented inside-outside combination with center Elizabeth Williams and guard Chelsea Grey. Williams is still recovering from a stress fracture in her lower right leg ? she played through it during the NCAA tournament.

Stanford, like Connecticut has made it to the past five straight Final Fours, yet is still looking for its first national championship since 1992. The Cardinal are led by versatile forward Chiney Ogwumike.

Brenda Frese may have her deepest team at Maryland, although the Terrapins took a hit when sophomore point guard Brene Moseley tore her left anterior cruciate ligament in a scrimmage Sunday.

There are high expectations at No. 6 Kentucky this year. The Wildcats were predicted to win the SEC and have their highest ranking in the preseason poll ever. Kentucky was sixth for a few weeks last season.

"Having a high ranking is a visible sign of the tremendous progress our program has made and we are working hard every day to make sure we are one of the best programs in the country at the end of the season," Kentucky coach Matthew Mitchell said.

Notre Dame, Penn State, Louisville and Georgia round out the top 10. It's Penn State's highest ranking since 2004.

Delaware followed up its first appearance in the Top 25 last season with a No. 11 ranking in the preseason poll. The Blue Hens are once again led by star Elena Delle Donne, who helped the team win its first NCAA tournament game last season.

"People in the country have taken notice of Delaware, which is a great thing," coach Tina Martin said. "This is great exposure for the University of Delaware, certainly, and we are proud that the committee and the panel that votes on this thinks so highly of us and holds us in such high regard at this point. But we have a lot to prove before we can consider ourselves as one of the top 11 programs in the country."

Oklahoma, California, St. John's and Texas A&M follow the Blue Hens.

Vanderbilt, West Virginia, Nebraska, Ohio State and Tennessee are the next five. It's the Lady Vols' lowest ranking in the preseason poll since the team wasn't in the first poll ever in 1976-77. They've only been out of the Top 10 in the preseason one other time and that was in 1984-85.

Purdue, Georgia Tech, Oklahoma State, Miami and DePaul round out the poll.

The Blue Demons are one of six teams in the poll not ranked at the end of last season. The others are Oklahoma, California, Vanderbilt, West Virginia, and Oklahoma State.

The Big East and SEC have five teams in the Top 25 with the Big Ten, Big 12 and ACC each having four. Delaware is the only non-BCS school in the poll.

Health & Fitness Q&A - Pt.1

 • Personal trainers are expensive
 • Nutritionists are expensive
 • Physiotherapists are expensive
 • Cardiologists and Orthopedic surgeons are really, really expensive

So?to make your life easier, fitter, healthier & sexier? I am starting this brand new Q & A series for HHM.

Every now & then, I am going to email 2 or 3 questions to a group of the web?s smartest health & fitness bloggers. When I have enough answers, I will write up the post and put it online.

Here?s the first installment

Question #1

In your opinion, what is the healthiest way to eat?

Answers

 • Nia Shanks says?.I?m all about simplicity. Simplicity breeds compliance, and that brings about long-term success. I recommend people eat real, natural foods at least 90% of the time, eat approximately .8 grams of protein per pound of bodyweight, and enjoy their favorite treats on occasion because banning certain foods rarely works (exceptions include allergies, of course). It truly can be that easy, and I suggest people give it a try before searching for more strict rules and guidelines. Why make things more complicated than necessary?
 • James Stokes says?Vegan would be the healthiest way to eat. Ironically it?s the hardest to maintain.
 • Kodjo says?Eat small meals throughout the day, preferably 5 to 6 times. First meal (breakfast should be the most important one) should be eaten within an hour of waking up, to jumpstart your metabolism. Between lunch and breakfast, eat a snack. Keep lunch moderate; be generous with cruciferous vegetables. Between lunch and dinner, eat another snack. Eat dinner at least 3 hours before bedtime; and if you feel hungry late at night, eat a small snack. Stay away from artificial sweetners. Drink at least half your body weight in ounces of water daily. For example if you weigh 150 lbs, drink at least 75oz of water daily.
 • Ben from TDF says?We are convinced that having a varied and balanced diet is far more important than any of the faddie dieting ideas that constantly float around the internet. We all know deep down that if we eat a generally healthy and balanced diet, whilst doing at least 30 mins of exercise a day, we will lose weight and feel healthier. Its just that people go looking for an easier one stop solution instead of trying to change their lifestyle for the longer term.
 • Jessica Ellis says?CLEAN. I have read SO many diets and fads and in my experience, eating clean, whole foods?is the best way to go. It?s easy to modify for on and off season and it is a way of life rather than?a ?diet?.
 • Miz Fit says?I firmly believe when we can get there INTUITIVE or mindful EATING is the healthiest approach to food. ? It took me lots of trial & error (and error and error) to get there but I?ve found it to be freeing and ?satiating? on more levels than merely hunger. ?Now that I?m a mindful eater I?ve found it?s spilled over into my being more mindful in all areas of my life. ?For example I?ve become more an ?intuitive? than ?plannedoutscheduled? exerciser as well.
 • William Lockley says?In my opinion, the healthiest way to eat is to eat foods closest to their natural sources ie. whole foods such as fruit, animal protein, natural fats (avocado, nuts, olive/coconut oils) & foods that are higher in fiber.
 • Srdjan Popovic says? The healthiest way to eat is the way our primal ancestors ate for millions of years. Here?s my advice ? 1 -?Minimize your consumption of carbohydrates (grains, starches, sugars) and highly processed foods and drinks. This includes breads, pastas, potatoes, rice, oats, sugary junk foods, and sugary drinks. Fruit intake should also be moderated. 2 -Incorporate as much healthy fat into your diet as you need. Our bodies are designed to use fat as its primary fuel source, not sugar. ? 3- Consume more organically raised meats, lots of fish, nuts, and fibrous vegetables.?Consume moderate amounts of protein. The best sources are from grass-fed, antiobiotic-free, organically raised animals. ??This combination will provide you with optimal health and leanness.
 • Ann Gates says?Eat a healthy, well balanced, recommended portion sized meal 3 times a day.?A healthy, nutritionally rich breakfast is THE most important meal of the day: so don?t miss it! EVER!?Always give your children a healthy breakfast, and sit and eat with them, preferably round the table, to set a good life long example of a healthy lifestyle. Evidence is that families that eat together, stay healthy together!?Adopt the DASH food plan to ensure that you reduce your risks of high blood pressure and heart disease.?Don?t take supplements unless specifically prescribed or advised by your doctor or specialist for your specific health condition. Use the money instead to buy some fresh fish or fruit and vegetables!?Drink water throughout the day, and if you exercise make sure you drink water before, during and after exercise.?Avoid eating any processed food whenever possible. Avoid drinking soda, sugary drinks or eating anything that your grandmother wouldn?t recognise as healthy, home cooked food!?Choose sustainably sourced, fair trade food if you can afford it. When shopping in supermarkets, try and buy fresh produce when you can, and always wash it thoroughly before cooking.?I have always advised patients to buy the best quality, organic food, preferably locally sourced, or grown yourself. There is no real medical evidence for this advice (although some organic food can contain 30% less pesticides, which makes sense to me), but it does seem common sense!?And always enjoy a little bit of what you fancy, in moderation! This great tip was from my Grandmother who lived until she was 94 years old.
 • Waychaun says?I think the healthiest way to eat is consuming small meals, multiple times throughout the day! Ideally, about 5-6 meals will help keep your metabolism burning.
 • Jeff Green says? The key word being ?healthiest?, I would pick the paleo system. Not because it?s hot and popular right now, but because it?s the dietary regimen that addresses so many dietary restrictions yet still is effective in lowering overall body fat and increasing muscular hypertrophy. It addresses lactose issues and gluten issues, it makes up for the sorry lack of animal protein suggested by most diets, it puts fruits and vegetables as the only healthy carb source in its proper hierarchy where fructose can get out of hand so quickly. And lastly, puts nuts and healthy fat sources back in our diets where the belong and does a great job on nutrient timing where fats and carbs are concerned.
 • HUSLfit says??Here at HUSLfit, we don?t buy into the fad diets and quick fixes. ?Low-fat? meals that come in a box, loaded with sodium and additives, are not how we get down! We encourage people to simply eat clean, meaning to think simple and make small changes like avoiding processed meats, eating more fresh vegetables & fruits, and switching from white rices & breads to the healthier whole grain options.
 • TeamDNA Fitness?says??Healthy way to eat is by avoid junk food all together. What we mean by junk food is anything cheap and processed. We uderstand that it?s not convenient and many times more expensive but your health is expensive so it?s a good investment! Having healthy snacks daily such as fruits, veggies ?or items which contain good fats like?oatmeal bars, granola bars, peanuts and yogurt ar all healhy habits to pick up. It?s important to know whats going in your mouth by reading nutrion facts on all that you eat, something that many dont care to find out. Eating sensible portions are vital to eating healthy so if your plate of food is larger than your cupped palm of your hand, then you?re eating too much. overall you have to stay away from junk foods, sugar, and high fructose corn syrup items.
 • Heather Frey?says?CLEAN. That is, none (or as little as possible) processed, sugared, chemicalized foods. I don?t believe you have to eliminate whole food groups or only prepare your food one way in order to be healthy and I?m not a fan of those that try to scare people into thinking it is. There are 1000?s of studies out there with as many conflicting theories so to believe just ONE is right, and right for everyone, is limiting and has the potential to turn people away from healthy eating. I love most veggies but some I refuse to eat raw. Yuck. I believe in whole grains. I?ve been starchy carb depleted when I pulled way back and my brain power and energy were at an all time low. I love what my morning oatmeal (and sometimes afternoon) does for me. If that doesn?t work for you, then great! Find a way of clean healthy eating that works in your life, for your tastes. I think the clean eating principals apply to nearly every solid food plan. If you stick with the idea that the more whole and natural the food, the better, and that you should eat a mix of protein, good carbs, green and fruit carbs in the most delicious and creative ways as you want, then you?re doing pretty great.

Question #2

For the average person, which is more important?cardio or resistance training?

Answers

 • Nia Shanks says?Resistance training, no questions asked. You can achieve the results you?re after (lower body fat, ?toned? appearance) in much less time. The average female gym-goer spends anywhere from 30-60 minutes on a cardio machine 4 or more times per week. They can build a better body with 3 strength training workouts per week that take 30-40 minutes.
 • James Stokes says?Cardio all day. You can do everything else all day but without endurance you?re hit.
 • Kodjo says? You can?t pick one and leave the other. You need a little bit of both. Resistance training will help you build strength while cardio will help you burn stored fat, and promote lean muscles.
 • Ben from TDF says?We hate to sit on the fence but it?s got to be a mix of the 2. We think it?s strange that most people measure their health by weight when most of us know muscle weighs more than fat and really often what people care about is how they look. For that reason resistance training is important. To really enjoy life and for all the health benefits you need to be fit though, so cardio is probably the most important of the two.
 • Jessica Ellis says?BOTH ?- but an average person just starting out, I would focus more on cardio and then slowly?increase resistance training. You need both but cardiovascular health and losing weight is usually?at the top of the list for someone starting out and cardio is great for that.
 • Miz Fit says?Uh oh. Another one where I?m super opinionated and ?firmly believe.? RESISTANCE TRAINING. ?For myriad reasons from fat loss to functional fitness. Im completely biased though as the weight room is where I not only shaped but physique?-it?s where I found my voice.
 • William Lockley says?I believe they go hand in hand and really depends on the individuals goal. Fat loss, more cardio/cardio based movements. Muscle gain, less cardio but still SOME form of extra cardio to help keep added body fat to a minimum. Personally, I prefer HIIT.
 • Srdjan Popovic says? There is really no right answer to this because it?s highly dependent on your goals. I think for the average person, a proper balance of both can be highly effective.?Two side notes:?1. Don?t over-do your cardio. A short 10 minute session of HIIT followed by a 15-20 minute session of LIT (low intensity training) ? such as walking ? is a highly effective strategy.?2. Always do your cardio after your resistance training. Studies have found that subjects who perform cardio before weights have their growth hormone response to weight training blunted by almost 1,100% compared to when they did resistance training first. What this means is that if you do your cardio first, your resistance training efforts will be useless.
 • Ann Gates says? Both! But in fact a balanced weekly program of the 4 types of exercise are advised: cardio (or heart health exercise), strength (resistance), stretching (flexibility) and balance exercises is what we recommend for the average person. In fact ?average? people no longer exist, as many have long term health conditions or have been inactive for long periods. Everyone, but especially children, should make sure that they get at least the World Health Organisation?s (multi language versions available) recommendations for physical activity to help prevent and treat disease, each week!?What is important, is for you to choose an exercise program that you enjoy, that you can maintain, and that has opportunities to be shared with friends and family. Diseases from inactivity and unhealthy lifestyles kill more than 36 million people each year. So choose a fun, exercise program where you can stay active daily and insure, yourself and your family against ill health by enjoying a healthy lifestyle!
 • Waychaun says?Oh, that?s a tough one, because they both are so important! But if I had to pick one or the other? for the average person, I?d say cardio! I think your heart is the most important muscle in your body, so you definitely want to make sure your heart gets a good workout. With cardio, you can strengthen your heart, while burning fat to decrease your body fat percentage. Then later start to think about building lean body mass, to help burn more calories at rest. But cardio would definitely be the place to start!!
 • Jeff Green says?.Resistance training by far. The benefits are a list as long as one?s arm while traditional cardio (steady state training) tends to be limited in its overall benefits. One?s time should prioritize strength training for its injury prevention, body composition and performance functionality benefits. Cardiovascular training has its benefits for overall heart function and performance application but ?traditional? cardio yields little benefit to a positive body transformation result.
 • Justine?Keyserlingk?says??Both should be incorporated in order to get the most benefits. If anything one may want to focus more on one over the other depending on their fitness goals. (Think weight loss/toning vs getting stronger/increasing muscle mass).?Cardiovascular training strengthens the heart, is great for? caloric burning. It also increases levels of? ?feel good? hormones such as?serotonin, which helps with mood, and positive outlook on life.?Resistance training strengthens overall muscles and tendons which help protect the body by preventing overuse and sudden onset injuries. Furthermore, it also helps protect the bones which, in the long run will prevent fractures, and any number of debilitating diseases such as osteoporosis and arthritis, just to name a couple.?Overall, cardiovascular and resistance training combined helps one feel stronger, fitter, happier, and increase overall energy levels throughout the day. Win win situation if you ask me ;)
 • HUSLfit?says??People commonly say that a certain percentage of the health grind is dependent on nutrition and the remaining percentage is based on exercise. HUSLfit isn?t about the 50/50 lifestyle though, and we feel like the following is true for everyone: 100% focus on nutrition AND exercise makes you 100% more likely to succeed!
 • TeamDNA Fitness?says??We think cardio has a lot of benefits but for the average person ,it seems that resistance training would be more benefical. Resistance training? allows you to target specific areas to tone your overall physique while cardio trims the?fat? off the the top and since everyone holds fat differently, it?s unlikely to get the same results.?Another thing is that?cardio is very hard on the joints, tendons, ligamens and muscle so very easy to actually hurt yourself while resistance training is very limited and focused on a particaular body part. Overall, most people look to shed of weight but the thing about cardio is that you burn a lot more calories DURING exercise but when you?re done your body quickly returns to your starting metabollic rate so pretty much you get very little, if anything at all. Resistance raining helps you build muscle which spikes up your metabollic rate even when you?re sitting on the couch doing nothing, shedding away fat.
 • Heather Frey?says? It just has to be both, BUT I don?t think it needs to be just the standard dumbbell and barbell lifting. That?s just one way to work the muscles, but with wave of full-body workouts (CrossFit, Tabata, to name a few) you can do both at the same time. I?ve worked with people who have done nothing but one of the other for years and can?t understand why they never make progress and always look the same. Certainly some of this is their nutrition, but only moving fast doesn?t address the muscles you?ll need to carry you through life on a functional level. On a fitness level, for those who are really going for that athletic fit look, it?s an absolute must. The average person has the same physical needs at the fitness-fiend. Going back to the old car analogy, you can?t just give the car gas to go, it will only take you so far. You have to take care of the belts and bolts of the engine to keep it like new. Whenever I?m asked what?s the best way to workout I tell them two things: 1. Pick something you love. Find a fitness you?ll stick with and a way to move that moves you. 2. Think full-body health (heart, muscles, guts), not just weight loss. Weight loss alone has the mindset of urgency to it, an ?I?ll push hard until I lose weight, then go back to the way things were? which of course defeats? your greatest purpose, lifelong health and fitness. Find the best way to workout that hits the whole body.

Question #3

Tell me about an exercise or training method that:

 • You love and
 • Very few people know about?

Answers

 • Nia Shanks says?.I love push-ups. The sad thing is, everyone knows about them, and most people write them off as an exercise only for beginners. This is a huge mistake because push-ups can be used for building strength, and they?re much more shoulder friendly than barbell pressing exercises. If a traditional push-up is too easy, you can increase the difficulty by performing a more advanced variation, or adding external resistance via bands, weight plates, chains, or a weight vest. The majority of my clients use push-ups as their primary horizontal pushing exercise, and they say their shoulders have never felt better, too.
 • James Stokes says?Intense Abs / sit ups but stopping 10% of the way up and doing a set every 10% to hit muscle people normal pass by.
 • Kodjo says?I love doing V burpees and W burpees. They are advanced variations of the regular burpee routine.
 • Ben from TDF says?Tennis Cardio Training is something we love and don?t think many people will have heard of it. As the LTA say ? Cardio Tennis is a series of tennis-based drills and activities played to up-tempo music on a tennis court. It does not require tennis skills, but is all about keeping your heart rate up, burning calories and having fun.?If you want to really get fit whilst improving your tennis skills, Cardio Tennis Training is perfect.
 • Jessica Ellis says? There is a dam close to where I live and there is a huge set of stairs that people like to run up?and down. Instead of running the stairs (I had knee surgery in 2005) I run up the grass hill right?beside the stairs. Then I walk down the steps to the bottom and do it again. Its my own twist on?HIIT.
 • Miz Fit says? What I love and what I do is something we all know about and yet few of us put into practice. ?Im renown for NOT being hardcore in my workouts and approach to fitness. ?My training method? CONSISTENCY. ?Zero fits & starts as I firmly believe (<?theres that again) they are what hurts us both physically and emotionally. ? I found my healthy living path close to nineteen years ago, shed 35 pounds and have never regained the weight. ?My method is simple: a little bit of something, every single day, until youre dead. ?DONE!
 • William Lockley says? The training method I love is HIIT because it gets straight to the point. The misconception with HIIT is that it?s balls to the wall, feel like passing out type of workout, it?s not. HIIT simply consists of keeping the intensity high. Intensity can take on different forms ranging from tempo to load.?The exercise I particularly love is the front squat to press, sometimes referred to as barbell thrusters.
 • Srdjan Popovic says? One of my absolute favorite training methods is kettlebell training. Not many people are aware of the incredible power that kettlebells possess. Kettlebell training can help you build a strong posterior chain, improve your posture, improve your cardiovascular fitness, strengthen your core, rehabilitate various joints, and shed fat like you?ve never seen all in extremely short and unique workouts. I have a complete kettlebell training guide that will show you how to get started.
 • Ann Gates says??An exercise program that I love is Nordic Walking!?It involves daily walking, and can easily be shared with friends and family. The health benefits are well researched: ?Nordic walking can produce up to a 46% increase in energy consumption compared to walking without poles. It also has been demonstrated to increase upper body muscle endurance by 38% in just twelve weeks?.?Nordic walking is a great exercise for many patients with diabetes, obesity, Parkinson?s disease, and helps with many other diseases too- so I often recommend patients to ask their doctor or health care provider how to find local classes or a qualified instructor. Many people don?t realise that walking is such a great form of exercise, and Nordic Walking combines not only better use of muscles BUT it also provides a great cardiovascular workout!
 • Waychaun says? There are two exercises that I love. The first would be swimming, because it?s a full body workout, from head to toe!! Getting in the water gives you a weightless feeling on one hand, but on the other hand, can provide a good amount of resistance to really fatigue your muscles! It?s great! My most favorite would have to be dancing! Latin dance, Zumba, Hip Hop, all of it! I love taking the classes that keep you moving the entire time, but you?re having so much fun that time just flies right by!! Those are the exercises/training methods that I love!
 • Jeff Green says?I like the use of Iso-extremes as an adjunct to my current training practices. Iso-Extremes is a training tool to where one holds themselves (bodyweight) in the weakest range of motion for a pre-defined time limit. It teaches form and technique above all as the application of said exercise is imperative the right muscles are firing in the correct sequence with the correct distribution. The collection of exercises include iso-lunge, iso-squat, iso-GHR, iso-pull, iso-push, iso-curl and iso-dip. The collection of exercises and their application have been around for years and perfected by the Russians. We use them in the beginning of the workout for pre-exhaust, at he end for a great finisher, or by themselves for field work as no extra equipment is needed.
 • Justine?Keyserlingk?says? ?Speaking of Cardio vs Resistance training, my favourite method combines both in one ? meaning strengthening (very often using ones own body weight or free weights) along with keeping the heart rate up. This could be as simple as combining body weight resistance exercises such as push ups and squats, with a more aerobic exercise such as jumping jacks, running around the block, or even burpees for more advanced clients (which is, in my mind the most full body exercise out there, both aerobic and resistance wise) -?Spin X-fit class is a class that we have started to offer at Quad Spin, the studio I train clients and teach spinning at. This workout entails a similar structure as described above. In this case, we alternate between intervals of short cardio bursts on the spinning bike, with heavier weight & core training off the bike. This structure makes the time go by so fast since it is ever-changing, and also keeps everyone motivated since there is almost no chance of them getting bored!! All angles of fitness are being tackled here!
 • HUSLfit?says??We love circuit training! Nothing revs up the heart rate and demands the muscles to battle fatigue like stacking up multiple sets without breaks! One way we do this is by performing one set of each movement planned for the day on succession, then resting for about 60 seconds after the entire round is done. We?ll repeat that for 3 rounds. This keeps you moving, as some body parts rest while others work. It?s quicker and more efficient than traditional formats, and really gets the body sculpted!
 • TeamDNA Fitness says?A training method that we love has got to be calisthenics. Calisthenics uses the resistance of your own body to build strength, increase flexibility and burn fat. We recently got involved in it ?couple months ago and fell in love with it. The reason behind this is because it requires no equipment or weights, and the exercises can be performed anywhere there is a floor and enough space to move in. The benefits of calisthenics effects are wide-reaching and many people we?ve come across didn?t even know the meaning of calisthenics until we told them. Calisthenics workouts involves using multiple muscle groups in your body instead of just plain isolation exercises. Calisthenics can change your ?overall physique no matter what goals you have.
 • Heather Frey says?Honestly, I love a lot of training methods and wouldn?t tell anyone to do just one. I love the intensity and body workout efficiency of CrossFit (though I don?t recommend it for beginners); I tried a workout at a studio that spends half the hour doing a non-stop, sweat-pouring, full-body circuit and the other half doing cardio machine circuit; I have the Insanity DVD?s when the day gets away from me and I can?t get to the gym; and I love my solid beloved weight training, different muscle groups on different days. Bottom line, I like to feel the workout when I leave, and see the workout in the mirror.

Thanks to all our fitness gurus for participating in this inaugural Q & A session. I really appreciated them taking the time to answer my questions.

If you have any questions that need answering or want to suggest a fitness guru that I should contact for the next installment?leave a comment

Samsung Galaxy Note II for Verizon hands-on

Samsung Galaxy Note II for Verizon handson

So far we've had the opportunity to review the global edition of the Samsung Galaxy Note II -- as well as get our hands on three of the five variants known to be making their way to the US -- but tonight we got our first official look at Verizon's particular flavor. Not that it's much different than the rest of the crowd: it's loaded with the same specs we've seen on the N7100 model (5.5-inch HD Super AMOLED display at 1,280 x 720, 3,100mAh battery and a quad-core Exynos processor clocked at 1.6GHz), with the exception of Verizon-specific LTE bands, and have the same button layout that we've come to expect. Of course, there's that hideous Verizon logo on the main button, but that's the only visual difference we could spot.

Software-wise, Verizon's version of the Note II contains the built-in apps we've gotten accustomed to with its Android phones: VZ Navigator, My Verizon Mobile, and Mobile Hotspot. The device we picked up was running Jelly Bean, like its counterparts from other carriers. Sadly, no pricing or availability is yet available for the Note II on Verizon, with reps at the Samsung event we're at saying that it's up to Verizon to loose that news.

Possible oil spill in Mon turns out to be river sediment

Emergency officials said a possible spill in the Monongahela River on Tuesday afternoon turned out to be oil stirred up from the bottom of the river.

The incident was reported between the Rankin and Homestead Grays bridges, where a tugboat was also stuck after the barges it was pulling turned sideways.

"The wind just pushed the barges out of control of the tug, and they went sideways into the channel ashore," said Allegheny County Emergency Services Chief Alvin Henderson.

People lined up and watched as the operator revved the engines, trying to break free.

"For about 45 minutes he was running the engines hard and trying to pull himself out, and as we watched, he really looked like he was going to make it," said witness Judy Jaquinn.

Henderson told Channel 4 Action News' Andrew Del Greco it didn't appear the tugboat hit anything, and officials were talking with the captain as part of their investigation.

"He's advising us that he does not feel that he has an active leak of any type of diesel fuel or chemical from the one hazardous materials barge unit that's tied onto his tug," Henderson said. "Right now, it looks like the sheen we're picking up on the river might be from just the churning of the motors from him trying to get straightened up into the channel."

Officials said the river current, combined with strong winds, pushed the barges into the river banks.

"There is obviously years of sediment in that silt bed. That's where the oil sheen came, out of that sediment," Henderson said.

By 6:30 p.m., three hours after the barge became trapped, a second tug boat was finally able to pull it out and the channel was reopened.

There were 12 empty barges total, and officials at the scene said one way to help prevent this from happening on another windy day is to use a larger tow boat.

PFT: Roethlisberger still confident in Wallace

Pittsburgh Steelers v Cincinnati BengalsGetty Images

Steelers receiver Emmanuel Sanders gave the rest of the NFL a clear lesson in how to save a timeout by employing poor sportsmanship on Sunday night, faking an injury to give his team time to get the right personnel on the field.

With the Steelers facing third-and-11 with six minutes left in the game, Pittsburgh wanted to substitute but didn?t have time to do it without picking up a delay of game penalty. So Sanders ? one of the players who was supposed to come off ? simply fell to the ground pretending to be hurt, which caused a clock stoppage that allowed the Steelers to get the correct personnel on the field.

It was incredibly obvious that Sanders was faking, but it became ridiculously obvious when Sanders went right back on the field just one play later. NBC?s Cris Collinsworth and Al Michaels both noticed that Sanders was faking immediately, and Michaels noted that the league office might have something to say about it.

Based on what the league office has said in the past, Sanders should have to explain himself. Last season, when two Giants players obviously faked an injury in a game against the Rams, the NFL distributed a memo saying, in part, ?all those suspected of being involved in faking injuries will be summoned promptly to this office.?

Well, now Sanders is suspected of being involved in faking injuries. But NFL spokesman Greg Aiello told PFT that Sanders wasn?t summoned to the league office, or disciplined in any other way. However, the situation is still being reviewed by the league office.

As I wrote at the time of the Giants? fake injury controversy, faking injuries is a time-honored practice in football. It dates at least to 1953, when a Notre Dame team was dubbed the ?Fainting Irish? after faking an injury to get a free timeout that set up a tying touchdown on the last play of a game against Iowa. But the fact that fake injuries have been around for more than half a century doesn?t make them acceptable. And since the NFL has warned teams not to do it, there?s no reason for the NFL not to act now that Sanders has obviously done it.

It would stink to see the NFL become like soccer, where players are constantly flopping to the turf with phony injuries. But if the NFL doesn?t crack down, things could head in that direction. The example that Sanders set on Sunday night is clear: If you want a free timeout, just fake an injury. The referee and the league office won?t do anything about it.

Cuba and its Kabuki dance relationship with Miami : BoomerCaf? ...

?
If you want to find a baby boomer who lives an active lifestyle, look no farther than Ed Rabel, who worked for many years as a correspondent, along with BoomerCaf? publisher and co-founder David Henderson, as a correspondent for CBS News. Ed continues to travel the world, and write about it, and gave us this excerpt from his book Ed Rabel Reports: Lies, Wars and Other Misadventures.

Ed Rabel in Havana beside a statue of writer Ernest Hemingway at?Cojimar, Cuba.?Cojimar is the tiny fishing village wherein Hemingway got his idea to write, ?The Old Man and The Sea.?

The truth is Cubans on both sides of the Straits of Florida are engaged in a Kabuki dance. Cuban exiles in Florida and Cuban Communists in Havana have beenlocked in a symbiotic relationship for a very long time. Entire livelihoods based on Fidel-bashing thrive in Miami, where virulent anti-Castro radio transmissions bore totears anybody who is not among the rabidly faithful. If one does not agree with the exile party line, he is liable to be bashed himself.

In Havana, the party could not be happier. As long as the Marxist despots have a reason to verbally attack the U.S., they will fare well. The party instills fear in the populace by warning that the Cuban-Americans want to return and take their homes and their dignity away from them. The exiles and Washington are the bogeyman, always ready to pounce. Washington could put an end to the foolishness in a nano-second by simply restoring normal relations with Havana. After all, we have normal diplomatic and trade relations with Communist China. We have normal diplomatic and trade relations with Communist Vietnam, where 55 thousand Americans died in the Vietnam War.

A treasured possession in Havana ? a 1950s era Chevrolet. Many American products have been embargoed by the U.S. for a half a century.

As much sense as it makes to normalize, Washington is not about to do it. Any administration, Democrat or Republican, that tried would be instantly branded as ?unfriendly? by South Florida?s huge exile community, one million strong. ?So what?? you ask. Well the ?so what? is contained in their ability to deny to either party the U.S. Presidency. Florida has 27 electoral votes. Without those votes, presidential aspirants can kiss their aspirations goodbye. Cuban-Americans take pride in beingable to
manipulate the vote for president any way they want to. Just ask Al Gore. So what if the rest of us are held hostage by their petulance?

It is high time for the Cuban-Americans to get over it. The way to get back to Cuba is to make nice. That?ll be the day.

Florida is just 90 miles to the north of Cuba.

The best travel crate ever! (if your dogs are not destructive) | Happy ...

By Sue Yellen, Monday at 7:26 am

The best travel crate ever! (if your dogs are not destructive)
Because we travel with our dogs, this crate was one of the best finds ever.

Last October, my husband and I attended the H.H. Backer Pet Industry Trade Show as retailers for my side business, www.bumperpet.com.? The show is heaven on earth for dog lovers and compulsive spenders.? Wandering up and down through the aisles, I found a company that wholesales pet crates and pet strollers for pets of all sizes, Pet Gear.? At the end of the show, I was fortunate enough to be able to purchase their soft crate which you can see in photo above.? It is their largest rounded crate, measuring approximately 42" x 42" by 28" when open and is a perfect size for my two Tibetan Terriers, who fortunately get along well with one another when confined to it.? Both dogs and crate (and owners) have traveled with it to Colorado and St. Louis, so far.? One of the nicest features is that it collapses to a very manageable size for any type of travel.? Or you can use it at home to confine your dogs when needed, if you don't have individual metal crates for them, as we do.? Another nice feature is that it is very light-weight and not cumbersome to carry.

?

Dog Crate1
Dog Crate2
You can see how slim it is when closed.

The crates are not perfect for all dogs, however.? I've gotten feedback from other Tibetan Terrier owners that their dogs can scratch through the mesh netting and escape.? Fortunately, my little destructo-girl, Izzy, has not yet figured that one out.? Perfect dog, Duncan, wouldn't think to scratch at the mesh.? While consumers cannot purchase directly from Pet Gear, I've provided a link to the one I purchased, although you can use the search terms "Pet Gear Soft Rounded Dog Crate" to see if you can find it for less money on other sites.

Bottom line is that I have been very happy with this purchase.? My dogs like it; I like it; and that makes me a happy owner.

Interview: DIY Network's 'Man Cave' host Jason Cameron

Mark: You?re inside my fix it up life with my wife Theresa.

Theresa: ?and my husband Mark.

Mark: We are on the set of DIY Network?s ?Man Caves.?

Theresa: They let me on. They let me on the set.

Jason: Just tune out. Don?t get excited because you?re going to leave here in a minute.

Theresa: I?m wearing my CAT workboots.

Jason: You can stay. Those are nice. I like those.

Theresa: Trying to get on being all Man Cave and stuff.

Jason: You?re trying to fit right in aren?t you?

Theresa: Yes, how am I doing?

Theresa's CAT Workboots

Jason: Guys, what do you think? She doing all right with her boots?

Theresa: Am I doing okay?

Mark: That?s a big boot strap, I like it.

Theresa: Thank you. I?d watch his style and I?m going to say congratulations to you because Man Cave is now in the Merriam-Webster Collegiate Dictionary as an official word and I want to say it?s probably has something to do with all of you.

Jason: Thank you. I wish, I wish we could take credit for that. I think Man Cave the phrase was around before we actually started the show. We?d like to take credit.

Mark: You pushed it over the edge of the cliff.

Jason: I think we elevated it. I think we elevated it.

Theresa: I think you did.

Jason: Elevated is good.

Mark: I?ll go with cliff, but over the top.

Theresa: They say that it started with the ?Men are from Mars, Women are from Venus? book and that whole series.

Jason: It probably did. It probably did.

Theresa: You guys exploded it.

Jason: I wouldn?t pick Mars, but that?s all right. Mars is cool.

Theresa: Where are men from?

Mark: They found life there or maybe life.

Jason: They have found life. I think so. Something that looks like life.

Mark: Someone call National Geographic.

Jason: Yes, we might need to check on that, but Mars is cool.

Mark: By the way, in case you?re not watching it that you hear is Jason Cameron.

Jason: Yes.

Tony Siragusa

Mark: Who?s the host of DIY Network?s Man Caves?that also premieres Friday at 10 on DIY Network.

Theresa: Yes, but I want to know, you?re a licensed contractor. Now why is Tony Siragusa a Man Cave specialist and you?ve done ten seasons of Man Cave on DIY Network, what does it take to go from an apprentice of a Man Cave specialist all the way up journeyman and the whole thing, where are you in the process?

Jason: You just put a lot into that question.

Mark: Head shaking is the best.

Jason: The fact ?

Mark: Jason, what you want to do is steal third and then go over her head fake and come back to button hook.

Theresa: I?m a woman. I bring complication into the whole thing.

Jason: That?s good though. That?s good.

Theresa: That?s why you want me out of your man cave.

Jason: I?m thinking about the whole, what I want to answer. First of all, I?m amazed and delighted that Man Cave has been on for ten seasons. It?s pretty rare in this business that that happens so I?m really excited about that. We got an amazing crew. We have a great time. I mean Goose is a pain in the butt, but that?s a whole other story, but ten seasons is pretty awesome and like you said, this Friday we?re going to premiere our tenth season with Artie, with Nick and Artie?s show. Their studio man cave which was a blast to do because I was laughing the whole time.

Mark: Nice.

Jason: Yes, it was a lot of fun, but it?s been an amazing ride and we?re still going and the fact that we built probably over 100 man caves and I don?t have one yet is really annoying me at this point.

Theresa: That?s really kind of sad.

Jason: It is sad. You laugh.

Theresa: I think you?re just trying to get, after you become a man cave specialist, get that title then you?ll be able to have your own.

Jason: Goose has ?

Theresa: You?re like in training right now.

Jason: Really?

Theresa: Yes, 100 isn?t quite enough yet, right?

Jason: Not yet? Really? All right, I guess we?re still in training. Goose has the title of man cave.

Theresa: He does have the title.

Jason: I don?t know how he got the title of man cave specialist to be honest with you.

Theresa: Maybe he arm wrestled someone for it.

Jason: He?s a specialist at not working. That?s what he?s a specialist at.

Mark: So what you?re saying is that you?ve done 100, without Goose 250 easy.

Jason: Pretty much. That?s a good way to put it. There you go. It would?ve been 250.

Theresa: Okay, I have a question about the men and their man caves.

Jason: Hit me.

Theresa: You have done man caves for famous people and you?ve done man caves for just regular people like my husband here.

Jason: Mike, great guy.

Theresa: I want to know, is there like a dream of a man cave that?s different between a famous person or a regular person or are all man cave dreams pretty much the same?

Jason: I think all man cave dreams are unique to that person because every guy is different. Some guys are sports fans, some guys are cigar guys. We do a cigar lounge. Some guys are golfers. It just depends on the guy. They?re all very unique, but the star aspect when we do those, I think it?s just more, it?s just a bigger show. Ninety percent of what we do are just regular guys which is what we love to do.

Theresa: I?m just wondering like a famous person who?s so busy and going around and doing all kinds of stuff would their man cave just be like some kind of Zen, relaxing place?

Jason: You would think so, right?

Theresa: But not so much.

Jason: Not so much. I would say it?s 60/40, 60 Zen, 40 not so Zen.

Mark: Not so Zen by which you mean total chaos?

Jason: Yes.

Mark: High energy, cars parked in the basement kind of stuff.

Jason: What you just said, all of that.

Mark: Yes, yes.

Jason: You just pretty much summed it up. We have a lot of chaos as you guys have been here for a little while. You can see all the chaos going on because we?re getting ready to reveal right now so the chaos happens on this day when we?re getting ready to reveal. In fact, my guys are finishing up my project, which is a spinning table and they?re finishing it up for me.

Theresa: That spinning table.

Mark: The spinning table what does it spin from and to? Can you even say that?

Jason: I can. I can actually. It?s a dining table on one side and then you flip it and it?s a game table on the other side. So it actually spins, but I got to be honest with you because people watch the show and they see us build these projects, I dreamed this thing up. I built it in my head and then we actually had to make it come to life and thank God it works. Seriously.

Mark: Back of an envelope, ?Is this going to work??

Jason: It wasn?t that much. I had it down like a plan, but it?s just one of those things where I hope this works.

Mark: This is the beta piece.

Jason: Yes.

Theresa: I have a question. I have a girl question. Is your wife dazzled and happy because you dream these things up in your mind and you give them out to other men and they don?t actually come into her home.

Jason: Well, that?s the thing.

Theresa: Is that like a high five moment for her?

Jason: It?s a high five moment for her, not for me because I don?t have a man cave yet and this is the funniest thing and we talked about Goose a little bit, but Goose has a man cave. His restaurant has a man cave and now his wax figure at Madame Tussauds has a man cave. Me? No man cave.

Mark: There?s something to be said.

Theresa: I know.

Jason: Do you understand what I just said?

Mark: Yes.?I?m going to flow chart that for you. You lose.

Jason: I build a man cave for his wax figure and I don?t have a man cave yet.

Theresa: Do you have any children yet?

Jason: No, no children.

Theresa: That might have something to do with it.

Jason: It might, you think?

Theresa: Yes.

Mark: Because you need a retreat.

Jason: She?s like analyzing me right now.

Theresa: I am.

Mark: Oh yes, you?re getting the whole Freud treatment.

Theresa: I am.

Mark: This happens to me all day.

Jason: I was just going to say, are we talking to you guys (the crew on set)? I don?t think so.

Mark: Oh, wait a minute, that?s right.

Jason: I?m sorry.

Mark: There?s about ten children out there who are roughly 20 ?

Jason: Nobody asked you guys. Get out of here. Don?t pay any attention to them.

Mark: For ten years of Man Cave, you?ve had all kinds of experiences. You?ve walked into all kinds of houses and we?ve been inside this one. You?re literally all in their life. You?re using the upstairs bathroom. There?s food all over the place. There?s equipment and their families all in there, ten years you?ve met all kinds of people. Can you think of a moment when you?ve walked in and just had to really fight off hanging you head and saying, ?Oh no, we can?t do this.?

Jason: Actually the only time that ever happened to me was when we went to Kuwait. My whole crew and DIY sent everybody to Kuwait to do a troop cave at Camp Virginia and we walked into a USO tent and at first it was just a tent. I was just thinking, ?Okay, just a tent structure.? This was almost the size of a half a football field, huge. I walked in and the immediately, because you?re already acclimating to 130 degree heat and then you walk into this thing and you?re, ?There?s no way we?re going to be able to do this,? so that was my moment where I?m ?There?s just no way we?re going to be able to do this.?

Theresa: How did you do that?

Jason: Thank God for the CBOs, the construction battalion because they came through and helped us. Thank you guys if you?re watching. Amazing, but it was an amazing experience, but it was one of those moments where I?m, ?There?s no way we?re going to get this done.?

Mark: Was the awe of the whole thing just like you?re acclimating to everything because you?re in such a completely different environment?

Jason: We had two guys in the infirmary within the first two days.

Mark: Like dehydration, heat stroke, the whole thing?

Jason: Dehydration, choking on dust. It was, listen, I?m a huge fan in support of the troops. Big time supporter of the troops so to actually be there and see what they go through, it just gives you a whole new perspective on it.

Mark: Whole different level.

Jason: It?s amazing.

Mark: We?re going to take a moment of silence while we recoil from the drama of that.

Theresa: I?m kind of moved right now. So putting it into perspective, doing a regular man cave is kind of not as overwhelming anymore because now you?ve been through all of that.

Jason: I have, but it still can be overwhelming because, like I said, every time we come to a situation it?s always different and this is a good example, you guys were talking about we?ve got the whole family in there, we?ve got my whole crew, we?ve got camera guys, we got producers. Well, you know, everybody

Mark: I see Tony in there on a couch laying down.

Jason: Tony?s always on the couch. If he?s not on the couch, it?ll be a little surprising.

Mark: Tim, can you edit that out of the show, please? Thank you.

Jason: No, leave that it. We take over the whole house. I don?t think wives really understand when we show up what that means, that we?re actually literally taking over the house for three days.

Mark: You?ve taken over the driveway, too.

Jason: And the driveway.

Mark:
From the guy perspective, it is Man Cave honey, give me a second. Tool envy. Table saw, out feed table, two 12 inch slide compound miter saws.

Jason: Slide compound miter saws, there you go.

Mark: These things are awesome.

Jason: Dual compound by the way.

Mark: It?s the dual beveled slide armature, that one.

Jason: Articulating.

Mark: Articulating.

Jason: Yes, articulating.

Mark: I can say this, I saw the first one ever in existence.

Theresa: He did.

Mark: The prototype.

Theresa: He literally did.

Jason: Oh, did you really? Wow, they?re amazing. They are amazing. I absolutely love it.

Mark: Do you depend on those?

Jason: I absolutely love those.

Theresa: We have to go to break.

Jason: Oh, we do.

Theresa: Go to DIY Network. com, check out Man Cave 10 o?clock on Friday nights and follow Jason on Twitter, jcamerontv and we?ll be back in just a minute with more My Fix It Up Life.

EUR/USD: Euro traded lower amid persistent worries over Spain's ...

GCI Forex News - EUR/USD: Euro traded lower amid persistent worries over Spain?s debt issue, trading higher this morning

?

EUR USD

EURUSD Movement

For the 24 hours to 23:00 GMT on Friday, EUR declined 0.34% against the USD and closed at 1.3025, as risk appetite waned amid tepid US economic data and as concerns over the handling of Spain?s debt troubles continued to weigh amid ongoing talks in Brussels.

Meanwhile, the EU summit held on Thursday and Friday made substantial progress in speeding up economic integration within the Euro-zone when leaders agreed to set up a single banking supervisor for the 17-nation single currency bloc ? a key step towards a banking union. In a significant move, the summit agreed that the European Central Bank will have the power to intervene in any of the Euro-zone?s 6,000 banks.

European Council President, Herman Van Rompuy hailed the result of the summit as highly successful. He stated that ?this is a small revolution. It means that we?ll have only one supervisor for the whole Europe, who to a certain extent will replace all the national supervisors.?

However, the Spanish Prime Minister, Mariano Rajoy stated that his government felt it was under no pressure to seek a bailout and called it ?very good? that the European Central Bank?s unlimited bond-buying program is available if necessary.

At his first European Union summit since becoming premier in June, Greek Prime Minister, Antonis Samaras stated that record unemployment showed the price Greece was paying for austerity demanded by the Euro-area as a condition for emergency loans. He urged parallel steps to kick- start the economy and stuck to a request for two extra years until 2016 to meet targets for narrowing the budget deficit.

Meanwhile, the German Chancellor Angela Merkel raised new hurdles to using the Euro-zone?s rescue fund to inject capital directly into ailing banks from next year, thereby dashing Spain?s hopes of soon removing the cost from its strained national debt.

In economic news, Euro-zone?s seasonally adjusted current account surplus widened to ?8.8 billion in August, compared to a revised ?8.1 billion surplus in July, while producer prices in Germany rose 0.3% (MoM) in September, after growing 0.5% in August. Meanwhile, industrial orders in Italy declined at a significantly faster rate of 9.0% annually in August, compared to a 4.9% decline in July.

In the Asian session, at GMT0300, the pair is trading at 1.3037, with the EUR trading 0.10% higher from Friday?s close.

The pair is expected to find support at 1.3008, and a fall through could take it to the next support level of 1.2979. The pair is expected to find its first resistance at 1.3072, and a rise through could take it to the next resistance level of 1.3106.

The currency pair is trading between its 20 Hr and 50 Hr moving averages.

Hulu Plus app heads to Windows 8 tablets and tablets, tailored for new UI

Windows 8 users, what with their "Modern" UI and pinned applications, won't have to stoop to using Hulu Plus in an antiquated internet browser any longer. Hulu today announced its brand new Windows 8 and Windows 8 tablet application, which is designed specifically for use with the tiled UI that Micrsoft's new multiplatform OS is based around. The new app aims to take advantage of that UI in a variety of ways -- pinning an episode or show to your start screen, for instance, or multitasking with other apps while Hulu continues playing in a smaller window, cropped to the left. We've dropped a video walkthrough of the app just below the break.

Those with early access to Windows 8 can grab the app right now in the Windows Store through this link (at least, when it goes live again -- it seems to be down right now); the app will be available to the rest of us at launch on October 26th, and on Windows 8 tablets the same day.

Obama, Romney cram foreign policy for last debate

WASHINGTON (AP) ? One day out from their last debate, Republican Mitt Romney and President Barack Obama are cramming foreign policy and taking a rare break from swing-state campaigning.

Monday's face-off in Boca Raton, Fla., represents one of the last major opportunities for Obama and Romney to capture the attention of millions of voters ? especially that small but sought-after group of voters who haven't yet made up their minds.

Obama was holed up in Camp David in Maryland's Catoctin Mountains, where he arrived Friday to prep for the debate, a 90-minute encounter focused on international affairs. With him at the presidential retreat were a band of top advisers including National Security Adviser Tom Donilon, campaign strategist David Axelrod and White House senior adviser David Plouffe.

Romney planned to spend the weekend in Florida, continuing intensive preparation that has consumed large amounts of his time in recent weeks.

Foreign policy has surfaced as a prominent issue in the waning weeks of the race, elevated by a deadly attack on the U.S. Consulate in Benghazi, Libya, and a restive situation in Syria. Although polls show voters continue to prioritize economic issues, both candidates are aggressively pitching themselves as more competent to be commander in chief.

In an unusually quiet day on the campaign trail, Romney running mate Paul Ryan was the only candidate to be out in front of voters. The Wisconsin congressman plans two events Sunday in Iowa, including one in Sioux City with country singer Mark Wills, plus an evening rally in Colorado.

Still, with a tight race closing in, neither Romney nor Obama can afford more than a few days away from the handful of states that will decide the winner.

Obama planned a whirlwind excursion starting after Monday's debate. Events Tuesday in Florida and Ohio will be followed by around-the-clock campaigning Wednesday in Davenport, Iowa; Denver; Los Angeles and Las Vegas. Then on to Tampa, Fla.; Richmond, Va.; and Cleveland on Thursday, when Obama will also return home to Chicago to vote early as part of the campaign's push for early and absentee voting.

In a sign that the candidates' time has become the most precious commodity, Obama's aides said he planned to sleep Wednesday night aboard Air Force One and would call undecided voters from the airplane between stops.

Breaking Views: Mike Butler: Te reo, funding, and hurt feelings

A report on kohanga reo released by the Waitangi Tribunal has already been snubbed by the government so any serious consideration of its contents is unlikely. Since few are likely to have the time or inclination to wade through the 424-page report, here is what it is all about --- a never-ending story about funding and some hurt feelings.

The first point to make is that although kohanga reo look like early childhood education centres, they are in fact language nests in which children are intended to learn and speak Maori to revitalise the language. The movement puts the survival of t

If kohanga reo and Maori immersion schools aim to revitalise the language, have they succeeded? Census results point to a decline in the proportion of Maori speakers among Maori children aged under 10, from 21 .9 per cent in 1996 to 18 .2 per cent in 2006 in the under-five age band, and from 22 .1 per cent to 18 .8 per cent in the five-to-nine-years band.

However, these figures are a dramatic improvement on 1975, when fewer than 5 percent of children could speak Maori, according to the Waitangi Tribunal?s Te Reo report.

Kohanga reo are early childhood education centres for children from birth to five years of age and their families which involve a total immersion in the Maori language. Close to 9000 children and members of their wider family attended the 471 kohanga reo across the country in 2012.

The first kohanga reo opened at Pukeatua Marae in Wainuiomata in April 1982, and by 1985 the number was approaching 400, taking in more than 6000 children. By 1990, there were 616 kohanga reo with 10,108 students.

Kohanga numbers have declined. The kohanga reo share of total M?ori enrolment in early childhood education dropped from 33 percent in 2002 to 26 per cent in 2007 and 22 per cent in 2011. In contrast, the share of Maori children enrolled in education and care centres rose from 32 per cent to 47 per cent over the decade.

The question remains whether this decline is a result of parents deciding general education is better for their children, or, as kohanga claimants argue, as a result of failures on the part of the government.

Matua Rautia: The Report on the Kohanga Reo Claim alleges that the Crown has acted in a manner inconsistent with the principles of the Treaty of Waitangi with respect to a range of issues affecting the relationship between the Crown and kohanga reo and the ability of k?hanga reo to operate effectively in ensuring the transmission of te reo me ng? tikanga . The report upholds the claimants? view that actions and omissions of the Crown, have led to a decline in the number of kohanga reo and the number of children enrolled in kohanga reo.

Unsurprising is the fact that the Waitangi Tribunal demands that the government appoints an interim independent advisor of sufficient standing, treaty knowledge, reo, and policy acumen to oversee the implementation of the tribunal?s recommendations; complete a policy framework, participation targets, quality improvement, supportive funding, a more appropriate (ie less demanding) regulatory and licensing framework, and collaboration on policy development for kohanga reo; research how kohanga reo contribute to language transmission; promote kohanga reo to Maori families; and apologise to kohanga reo and its trust for its failures.

Does the tribunal?s reasoning have a treaty basis? Good question! The link to the treaty is tenuous at best. There is no reference to the Maori language in the treaty because in an environment where everyone had to speak and understand Maori, it was inconceivable that at some stage, government support and funding would be demanded.

Therefore, the Waitangi Tribunal summons up its distorted and self-serving interpretation of the treaty, in which sovereignty is ceded and not ceded, to argue that protection for the language would derive from the Article 2 promise to guarantee Maori rangatiratanga plus the obligation to actively protect taonga (all their valued possessions).

Mai Chen for the claimants puts the case, complete with tortured logic, that the government was ?obliged to actively protect kohanga reo, to enable Maori to exercise of rangatiratanga over these taonga, to formulate good, wise and efficient policy, to make informed decisions about k?hanga reo, to give an effective remedy for any past breaches of the treaty.?

It is worth reading Chapter 3 of the report to see the depth and breadth of this ?we have rights but no responsibilities, someone else is to blame, and we are entitled to unlimited government funding? claim.

Aside from the high-sounding rhetoric of the report, the relationship between the Kohanga Reo Trust and the government broke down after Education Minister Anne Tolley said that an independent early childhood eduction taskforce would consult the trust, and neither the taskforce nor the Ministry consulted the trust before the taskforce?s final report, An Agenda for Amazing Children, was published in June 2011.

To make matters worse, the trust was thus neither informed nor afforded the opportunity to respond to the strongly critical remarks made by the taskforce in its report.

The kohanga reo movement, it asserted ?has, for some time, been viewed as too hot a political issue to touch?. It questioned the quality of ECE provision in kohanga reo and ?national body leadership for all children who attend kohanga reo, and whether the trust is a key barrier or contributor to the original aspiration of the movement?.

In its view, ?meaningful change is overdue and must be addressed?. Having pointed to the high incidence of ERO supplementary reviews as an indicator of poor quality in kohanga reo, it exhorted the Government to ?think seriously about the way it invests in kohanga reo?, highlighted the amount of ECE subsidy expended on kohanga reo subject to supplementary reviews, and recommended generally ?that a service without a satisfactory performance report not be able to access Government funding.?
