Comparing Apple news site apps for iPhone at a glance
Since I've compared iPhone Twitter apps, weather apps, podcast apps, and calendar apps, it's time to put my app where my scrutiny is and compare Apple news site apps, including iMore's, at a glance.
There's an interesting debate when it comes to websites-as-apps, and perhaps most poetically, Apple news sites as apps. Some think Safari on iOS is good enough that a website should just be a website, and packaging it up as an app is artificial at best, bloated at worst. Others believes that apps provide functionality beyond Safari and the web, including native performance, and the potential for native features like push notifications, pod catching, and more. Still others think the iPhone, due to its smaller size and more mobile use-case better suits websites-as-apps than the larger, yet still portable iPad. The internal discussion at iMore and Mobile Nations over making the iMore app touched on a lot of those points, and more. Ultimately, we've made on for the iPhone -- just now updated to version 2.0 -- but we haven't yet made one for the iPad. The discussion continues.
Other sites no doubt have gone through similar discussions, and each has made their own decision, determined their own value, and if they made it app, made their own choices about why and how to present themselves in a native, compelling way.
Default UIKit vs. custom interface, pulling the page via UIWebView vs. pulling the data and reformatting it, ads vs. no ads, and much, much more goes into planning and implementing a website-as-app. Not including international versions/site, forums apps (I'll do those separately at some point), general news/RSS or other aggregator apps (likewise), here's a glance at the content list screen of some of the most popular Apple (or generic tech that also includes Apple) news site apps.

The comparison is, of course, limited and incomplete. Some popular Apple news sites don't have apps, like Daring Fireball, MacRumors, 9to5Mac and The Loop. Some of the sites pictures above also include extra features, like iPad versions, podcast players, push notifications, forums integration, app recommendation engines, and more.
However, it does show some of the different opinions that went into making the basic functionality and design of an Apple news site-as-app. Checking them out, what's you feeling? Should websites stay websites, or do you like what going native has to offer?

Obama Seeks to End 'Political Gridlock' in Weekly Address
Capping off a week in which he reached out to Republicans in congress, President Obama expressed his eagerness to "enlist anyone who is willing to help" to boost the economy and end "political gridlock"
"At a time when our businesses are gaining a little more traction, the last thing we should do is allow Washington politics to get in the way. You deserve better than the same political gridlock and refusal to compromise that has too often passed for serious debate over the last few years," the president said in his weekly address.
The president highlighted the sharp improvement in jobs numbers this week, noting that the 7.7 percent unemployment rate is "now lower than it was when I took office."
"We need to do everything we can to keep that momentum going,' Obama said.
Earlier this week, President Obama met with Republican senators and Rep. Paul Ryan, chairman of the House Budget Committee, in an attempt to kick off budget negotiations and work on a deal to end the across the board sequester cuts which went into effect last week.
In his dinner with 12 Republican senators Wednesday evening, the president said the group "had an open and honest conversation about critical issues like immigration reform and gun violence, and other areas where we can work together to move this country forward."

The president will continue his discussions next week when he makes three trips to Capitol Hill to attend Democratic and Republican meetings beginning on Tuesday.
"As Democrats and Republicans, we may disagree on the best way to achieve our goals, but I'm confident we can agree on what those goals should be. A strong and vibrant middle class. An economy that allows businesses to grow and thrive. An education system that gives more Americans the skills they need to compete for the jobs of the future. An immigration system that actually works for families and businesses. Stronger communities and safer streets for our children," the president said.
But while the president called for cooperation between the two parties in finding ways to strengthen the economy, Republican Sen. Jeff Sessions of Alabama, the ranking member of the Senate Budget Committee, pinned the blame for inaction on the budget on Democrats.
"Every time lawmakers try to reform the bureaucracy to accomplish these goals, they meet with the same response: President Obama attacks the reformers, saying such ideas aren't compassionate or fair. But what is truly unfair and lacking in compassion is to protect a federal bureaucracy that is failing those that need our help the most," Sessions said in the weekly address. "President Obama speaks of his deep concern for struggling Americans, yet his plans are focused on growing government-not the economy. He has no effective plan to create better jobs, more hiring or rising wages. That's what's missing."
"Right now, our massive debt is slowing the economy and depressing wages. We have a moral duty to balance the federal budget and bring the deficit down to zero. This is the great challenge of our time," Sessions added. "You may be surprised to learn that we can achieve this goal if we simply hold the annual growth of spending to 3.4 percent each year. But I fear the Democrat proposal will fail this defining test and will never achieve balance. I fear it will crush American workers and our economy with trillions in new taxes, spending and debt. I fear Chairman Murray will follow the President's lead: raising taxes to enrich the bureaucracy at the expense of the people."

How the daffodil got its trumpet
Mar. 9, 2013 ? The daffodil is one of the few plants with a 'corona', a crown-like structure also referred to as the 'trumpet'. New research suggests that the corona is not an extension of the petals as previously thought, but is a distinct organ sharing more genetic identity with stamens, the pollen-producing reproductive organs.
The origin of the corona has long been a subject of debate in botany, and in the 1930s botanist Agnes Arber claimed that it was an extension from the petals. With its colourful petal-like appearance, it's easy to see why this was believed for so long. Yet by studying the corona's development and genetic information, this new study has shown that it is in fact related to stamens.
Dr Robert Scotland of the University of Oxford led the research, and was supported by colleagues at Harvard University, the United States Department of Agriculture and the University of Western Australia. The researchers were funded by the Gatsby Charitable Foundation and the United States National Science Foundation. The study is published online in The Plant Journal.
By studying the development of daffodil flowers, the researchers found that the corona only begins to form after the other parts of the flower are fully established. "This shows that the corona could not be a straightforward modification of either petals or stamens," explains Dr Scotland. "Since it develops independently of both, it is more accurately described as a separate organ."
The different parts of daffodil flowers are located on a small cup-like platform termed the 'hypanthium'.
The researchers analysed genetic activity in all parts of the daffodil flower, and found that daffodil coronas were genetically similar to the stamens and hypanthium, but not the petals.
"We found that the corona develops from the hypanthium, and is not simply en extension of the petals or stamens," says Dr Scotland. "The corona is an independent organ, sharing more genetic identity with stamens, and which develops after the other organs are fully established."

Thereafter, Ch?vez?s body will be embalmed, much the way Russia?s Vladmir Lenin and China?s Mao Zedong were, and displayed in a glass case for eternity, Mr. Maduro says.
Once inside, visitors said they saw Ch?vez wearing his signature red beret and sash. Photography was not permitted, but visitors say that on Wednesday and Thursday, Ch?vez was dressed in a blue suit. That was swapped out this morning ? before his funeral ? for his military fatigues.
?I was filled with sadness when I approached his casket,? says Juana Uscategui, an elementary school teacher. She waited 15 hours in a wheelchair to catch a glimpse. ?When I finally saw, I was overcome with joy, as he was finally resting. He wore his red hat, his suit and medals. He was beautiful.?
For Lenin Benitez, a political organizer, it was a two-day journey.
After driving overnight from the state of Lara in the northwest, he queued up because it was ?necessary to see him again and to show to the world that Venezuela stood with their president.?
He adored the idea of embalming the president.
?In the rest of the world, people tell their children stories about fictitious heroes, like Batman and Robin,? Mr. Benitez says. ?Here in Venezuela, we can tell our story of Hugo Ch?vez and his deeds. But more than that, we can show him to our children and continue to inspire the revolution.?
