Might Teresa Giudice Lose Her Kids?!?

Pretty much everything you see from Teresa Giudice on television is fake.

But a new report claims this Real Housewife of New Jersey and her husband, Joe, could be in some serious trouble. Simply put, an insider tells The National Enquirer: "I think Teresa and Joe will lose their kids if they don’t clean up their act."

Teresa and Joe Giudice

That act allegedly includes violent outbursts and alcohol-fueled benders. Joe, according to this tabloid, even took a spill and bloodied his mouth recently... while holding young daughter Gia.

“If Teresa had any brains at all, she wouldn’t leave her girls alone with Joe when he’s drinking,” said the mole. “It’s an accident waiting to happen. Child Protection Services needs to watch a few episodes and they’d see for themselves that there’s enough evidence to use in a child neglect case.”

The couple has four daughters - Gia, 10, Gabriella, 7, Milania, 5 and Audriana, 2 - and has faced multiple legal issues over the last year or so.

In January, for instance, Joe had to pay a former business partner $260,000 because he forged his name on a mortgage document. He was also arrested in March.

More evidence obesity tied to colon cancer (Reuters)

NEW YORK (Reuters Health) ? Older adults who are heavy, especially around the middle, seem to have a higher risk of developing colon cancer than their thinner peers, a new study finds.

The findings, reported in the American Journal of Epidemiology, add to evidence that obesity is a risk factor for colon cancer.

They also suggest that exercise could be an important part of the picture, particularly for women.

The study included more than 120,000 Dutch adults ages 55 to 69 who were followed for 16 years. During that time, about two percent developed colorectal cancer (tumors of the colon and/or rectum); most were diagnosed with colon cancer.

The risk, researchers found, was 25 percent higher for men who were significantly overweight or obese at the outset, versus normal-weight men.

And waist size seemed to matter most: Men with the biggest bellies -- gauged by their self-reported "trouser size" -- had a 63 percent greater risk of colorectal cancer than men who were trimmest around the middle.

The findings were more complex among women, though. A large waistline was only linked to a higher cancer risk in women who also got little exercise (less than 30 minutes per day).

Women who topped a "44" in pants size and got little exercise were 83 percent more likely to develop colon cancer than women who had smaller waistlines and exercised more than 90 minutes per day. (A "44" in Europe translates to about a size 16 in the U.S.)

The study "provides further evidence that excess body fat may contribute to a higher risk of colorectal cancer," lead researcher Laura A.E. Hughes, of Maastricht University in the Netherlands, told Reuters Health in an email.

"It is important to maintain a healthy body weight throughout life, as this may lower your risk of colorectal cancer," she said.

It also makes sense that excessive abdominal fat would be particularly linked to the disease, according to Hughes.

Studies have tied abdominal obesity to other health conditions, like diabetes and heart disease. And belly fat seems to be particularly linked to chronic, low-level inflammation in the body, Hughes explained.

That inflammation is thought to be involved in a number of disease processes.

"One of our most intriguing observations," Hughes said, "was that abdominal fat was associated with colorectal cancer in women only when combined with low exercise levels."

It's not clear why that might be, or why the pattern was seen only in women, she said. But the finding hints that calorie balance -- how much you take in through food, and how much you burn through exercise -- may be important, according to Hughes.

So, she said, "women should focus on maintaining a healthy lifestyle rather than simply paying attention to what the scale says."

In the U.S., it's estimated that just over 141,000 people will be diagnosed with colorectal cancer in 2011, while nearly 50,000 will die from the disease, according to the ACS. The average American has about a 1 in 20 lifetime chance of developing the tumors.

Risk factors for colorectal cancer include older age (it's usually diagnosed after age 50), a history of colitis or Crohn's disease (inflammatory disorders of the colon), a family history of the cancer, and smoking.

Some studies have also linked diets high in animal fat, and low in fruits, vegetables and fiber, to an increased risk.

Female horses could star on Day 2 of Breeders' Cup

(AP) ? A filly and a mare could crash the male-dominated second day of the season-ending world championships, with Havre de Grace and Goldikova strong contenders in their Breeders' Cup races against the boys.

Havre de Grace (HA'-vur-duh-grays) will face 11 males in the $5 million Breeders' Cup Classic on Saturday. The filly was listed at 3-1 on the morning line behind 5-2 favorite Uncle Mo.

Just before the Classic, 7-5 favorite Goldikova will go for a record fourth consecutive victory in the $2 million Mile on the turf, the European star's final race before retirement.

"If she were to pull that off, I think you just bronze her and put her in the infield," said Hall of Fame trainer D. Wayne Lukas, who doesn't have a horse in the Mile. "You don't give her a trophy."

Friday's opening day of the Breeders' Cup at Churchill Downs features six races, starting with the new $500,000 Juvenile Sprint for the boys followed by five races exclusively for fillies and mares.

But the $2 million Ladies' Classic didn't have Havre de Grace, whose owner Rick Porter preferred to chase the boys, bigger money and a shot at Horse of the Year honors in the Classic a day later.

"I certainly hope we get good consideration and a lot of it will depend on how we do," he said.

A victory Saturday would put Havre de Grace in strong position to be the third consecutive filly to win Horse of the Year, an honor claimed by Rachel Alexandra and Zenyatta.

Havre de Grace was named by Porter for the Maryland city and former racetrack located halfway between Wilmington, Del., and Baltimore on the Chesapeake Bay. The name means harbor of grace or mercy in French.

"Around here, we just call her Gracie," trainer Larry Jones said.

She was third in last year's Ladies' Classic at Churchill Downs under a different trainer in the worst finish of her career. She is 5 of 6 this year, including a win against the boys in the Woodward Stakes at Saratoga on Sept. 3, beating Classic contender Flat Out by 1? lengths.

Her only loss this year was to Blind Luck by a nose in the Delaware Handicap in July.

"We think she's the best she's been all year," Jones said.

Besides Uncle Mo, some of Havre de Grace's biggest challengers in the Classic are Flat Out, European import So You Think, Game On Dude and Stay Thirsty.

Havre de Grace will be running 1? miles for the third time in her career, having finished second twice at the distance to Blind Luck, last year's champion 3-year-old filly. She drew post 10, with Uncle Mo among the horses outside her.

The race is at the same track where Jones' filly Eight Belles finished second in the 2008 Kentucky Derby, then broke her ankles as she was pulled up past the finish line and had to be destroyed, horrifying the crowd. Her death had critics calling for fillies to stick to racing against their own gender.

But with the success of Rachel Alexandra, who beat the boys in the 2009 Preakness, and Zenyatta, who became the first female to win the Classic later that year, the controversy has passed.

Jones retired at the end of 2009, bogged down by the rigors of running a 100-plus horse stable and his own struggle to get past Eight Belles' death and the subsequent public fallout. A red sign with her name and eight tiny bells hangs on a nail outside his stable office. Jones brings it along wherever he is racing and on this day he wore an Eight Belles T-shirt under his work clothes. Her ashes are buried outside the Derby Museum at Churchill Downs.

"We keep her close to us," he said.

"Racing is better today because of Eight Belles. She made a lot of changes in a short period time that wasn't getting resolved. She's going to go down with a huge legacy and she's going to go down in history where most of us will be forgotten."

Jones and Porter want the same legacy for Havre de Grace, who would have been the favorite in the Ladies' Classic. Rather than going for a win against her own gender, they are pulling out all the stops by sending her in the Classic.

"This horse could be our Zenyatta," Jones said. "Hopefully she can someday be mentioned in the same breath as Zenyatta and people not cringe."

Jones and Porter started talking about Horse of the Year honors in the summer, and they knew that an easy win by Havre de Grace in the Ladies' Classic wouldn't carry the same weight as a victory against the boys.

"We knew we had to get a little aggressive," Jones said.

Ireland-bred Goldikova is sticking to the Mile, a race she has won the last three years. She has 14 wins in Grade or Group 1 races in her 26-race career, including nine wins against males. She has finished out of the money just once.

"I haven't seen a horse in all my career do what she has done," trainer Freddy Head said.

Some critics have suggested that Goldikova has slipped this year, noting she has two wins and three losses by narrow margins since winning last year's Mile.

"She's getting a bit more lazier. She's gotten a bit heavier," Head said, at the same time noting, "She still has the same will to win. She just wants to run, run, run."

Jockey Olivier Peslier is sad to be riding Goldikova for the last time before she heads off to the breeding shed.

"I'm very happy if I ride the baby," he said.

Goldikova will start from the No. 1 post on a turf course hit by steady rain Thursday. The weekend forecast called for sunny and dry conditions.

"Every time it's been soft (the turf), she's run a little below her form," Head said.

MF Global is first big US victim of Europe crisis (AP)

WASHINGTON ? The European debt crisis has claimed its first big casualty on Wall Street, a securities firm run by former New Jersey Governor Jon Corzine.

MF Global Holdings Ltd., which Corzine has led since early last year, filed for bankruptcy protection Monday. Concerns about the company's holdings of European debt caused its business partners to pull back last week, which led to a severe cash crunch, the company said in its filing.

In a statement, the Securities and Exchange Commission and the Commodity Futures Trading Commission said that they and other regulators had been closely monitoring MF Global's situation for several days "in anticipation of a transaction that would include the transfer of customer accounts to another firm."

MF Global told the regulators early Monday that it hadn't reached an agreement on a deal and it reported "possible deficiencies" in customers' futures trading accounts, the two agencies said.

Corzine, the former head of investment banking giant Goldman Sachs Group Inc., oversaw MF Global as it amassed $6 billion in debt issued by financially strapped European countries such as Italy, Spain and Portugal. Their bonds paid bigger returns than U.S. Treasury debt because bond investors believed that they were more likely to default.

That bet eventually doomed the company. A regulator complained last month that it was overvaluing European debt, forcing it to raise more money, according to the papers it filed with U.S. Bankruptcy Court for the Southern District of New York.

MF Global's bankruptcy is the eighth-biggest ever in the U.S., according to the research firm BankruptcyData.com. It's bigger than Chrysler LLC's in 2009 and smaller than those of financial-crisis casualties Lehman Brothers Holdings Inc., Washington Mutual Inc. and CIT Group Inc.

Last week, MF Global reported its biggest ever quarterly loss, and rating agencies downgraded its debt. Its stock plunged 66 percent. Spooked business partners required it to post more money to guarantee its trades.

Soon short of cash, MF Global looked for outside investors or buyers, but no alternative emerged before regulators' Monday deadline, the company told the court. Trading in shares of MF Global Holdings Ltd. was halted early Monday.

MF Global's bankruptcy shows the danger of investing when the outcome will be determined by government action, said Daniel Alpert, managing partner at the New York investment bank Westwood Capital Partners LLC.

"I don't think it's a canary in the coal mine, but it does show you that it's still a very volatile market," he said. "The nature of this crisis is that events can lead in any number of ways, and markets are trading on news, not numbers."

The SEC and the CFTC said they have determined that a bankruptcy proceeding overseen by the industry-funded Securities Investor Protection Corp., whose mandate is to protect investors when a brokerage firm fails, "would be the safest and most prudent course of action to protect customer accounts and assets." SIPC, which can provide up to $500,000 for each customer of a failed brokerage, announced separately Monday that it is beginning the liquidation of MF Global under its customary procedures.

MF Global's big bet on Europe might not have happened before Corzine joined. Until he joined, the company was known mainly as a dealer in derivatives, which are investments based on the value of some underlying asset. Corzine wanted to build MF Global into a major investment bank.

One method: Trading for the bank's own profit, a practice known as proprietary trading. Corzine made his career at Goldman as a trader, and the company became a trading powerhouse under his watch.

Proprietary trading was responsible for much of MF Global's quarterly loss, it said in court papers.

As of last week, MF had amassed net exposure of $6.29 billion in debt issued by Italy, Spain, Belgium, Portugal and Ireland. Of that, $1.37 billion was from Portugal and Ireland, which already were bailed out by European authorities. More than half was from Italy, whose borrowing costs increased in recent days as investors grew concerned about its finances.

By comparison, Morgan Stanley's net exposure to those countries was only $2.1 billion as of Sept. 30, according to its latest quarterly filing. Morgan Stanley's stock was battered last month because of concerns about its exposure to European debt.

Corzine was hopeful that European leaders would solve the crisis and protect the value of MF Global's holdings before investors grew wary. Last week, he said he expected the firm to "successfully manage these exposures to what we believe will be a positive conclusion in December 2012."

MF Global turned a profit just three quarters out of the past 12.

Corzine also is a top fundraiser for President Barack Obama. Corzine has helped raised at least $500,000 for Obama's re-election campaign since April, according to records released by the campaign.

At worst, MF Global's bankruptcy could roil credit markets and make financial companies reluctant to lend to each other. But the impact on markets will likely be muted, said Karen Shaw Petrou of Federal Financial Analytics.

"It appears their exposure to risk was particularly acute," she said.

MF Global's bankruptcy has prompted comparisons to Lehman Bros., whose 2008 failure touched off a global credit crisis. Even though Lehman was bigger and more intertwined with other companies, investors appeared worried Monday about other financial companies' possible losses, either from deals with MF Global or unrelated losses on European debt.

Bank stocks fell sharply on Wall Street after the bankruptcy filing. Morgan Stanley lost 8.7 percent, Citigroup 7.5 percent, Bank of America Corp. 7.1 percent and Goldman 5.5 percent.

Including its subsidiaries, MF Global has assets of $41.05 billion and liabilities of $39.68 billion, according to its bankruptcy petition.

Petrou said other firms holding European debt might survive the market turmoil if European leaders can convince the world that they are on track to solving the problem.

"It will work as long as the market has confidence in it," she said. "That's what makes this whole situation so spooky ? it's all driven by market confidence, or lack thereof."
